Lizzie watched as the girl, Emma offered her hand out. Lizzie cautiously shook it and got back to her art.
"That is amazing. Where did you learn to do art like that?" she asked.
"I mostly taught myself," she mumbled in response.
"That's so cool! I wish I could draw like that. Most the things I draw end up looking like a cat drew it." Lizzie breathed out a small laugh. "What is your name?" Emma asked. Lizzie looked up at her.
"Why?"
Emma looked confused. "I just want to know your name. Is that bad?"
Lizzie shook her head. "No sorry. I just don't talk to people." She looked back at her paper. "My name is Lizzie."
Emma looked at her, really looked at her. "Well then Lizzie, I like your eyes. They're cool."
Lizzie glanced at her suspiciously. "You're joking aren't you. No one likes my eyes. They're freaky." Lizzie shook her head.
Emma eyed her sympathetically. "Why do you think that?"
Lizzie scoffed. "Because people told me."
Emma looked at the table. "Is that why you don't talk to people and just observe?" Emma gestured to her artwork. Lizzie quickly covered it and her face flushed.
"M-maybe." This girl hardly knew her and was reading her like a book.
"Want to be friends?"
This brought Lizzie back. "Sorry I don't do 'friends'. Or people."
At that moment the teacher walked in and Lizzie didn't have to see the hurt and pity on Emma's face as she took in what Lizzie had probably gone through for that to be the case. After class Lizzie spent no time getting out of there. Her next class was history. She enjoyed history. The deep revelations behind wars. The interesting back stories. She took a seat in the back of the class and pulled out her history book. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the same boy from homeroom sit down next to her.
"Hey new kid, you're Lizzie right?" She looked at him and then back at her paper.
"Yeah. What about it?" He chuckled under his breath.
"You must not know who I am. I am Liam Dowhn. I'm the governor's kid. Kind of a big deal." She mouthed an O and kept her eyes on the page of her book. "Could you look at me when I'm talking to you? It's kind of rude not to." She ignored him.
"And it's kind of rude to bother a girl when she wants to be left alone." She gave him a sarcastic smile and glanced up at him. He was shocked at the audacity of the girl next to him. He smiled despite himself.
Definitely not a spoiled rich girl. The teacher walked in and started the class, talking passionately about ancient Mongolia, a topic he was clearly interested in.
After class Lizzie went up to the teacher.
"Excuse me? Hi I'm Lizzie, the new student. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for books on ancient Mongolia."
The teacher smiled. "Hi Lizzie. I'm Mr. Barnes. And I do have some books." He went over to his desk. He pulled out a pamphlet that had lists of books listed on it. She looked up at him.
"Can I find all of these at the library?"
He nodded. "You can. I made sure of that. There are books for everything we will study this year in history."
She smiled. "Thank you sir. I'll go check these out after school." She walked out and went down to her next class. After history school flew by. She only ran into Liam one more time, to her relief. And after school she went down to the library. It was downtown by her dad's bakery, so she'd decided to go there after. She walked past all of the shops all the other kids were going in and entered the library. She passed the front desk and a middle aged lady looked up from the computer.
"Welcome. Anything I can help you find?" Lizzie shook her head and smiled shyly. She went to the history section and started looking. She found five books on ancient Mongolia and two fiction books for fun. She went to the front desk to check out and she saw Liam there. She stopped right in her tracks. He looked up and saw her. He waved and she tried a small one and nearly dropped her books. He rushed over to help her.
"I'm fine," she snapped. This was interesting. What was a guy like him doing at a public library. He backed off but stayed close enough to make her back up.
"Hello to you too," he said. She smiled annoyed. She walked away to the desk and handed the books to the librarian. She got out her library card and put it out to for the librarian. She nodded and scanned it. She started checking out the books and Liam walked up behind her and leaned against the desk.
"Why'd you walk away?" he asked.
She rolled her eyes. "I needed to check out my books, my dad is expecting me." The last part was a lie but she didn't want to talk to anyone.
"Well can I help you with your books then?" He asked politely.
"I guess..." She mumbled. She never turned down help unless it bothered her too much. "Just please don't talk to me." She took two of the books, the fiction ones, and let him take the others. They walked out and started to the bakery.
"So what do you do for fun?" he asked, unaware he was talking until she didn't respond. "Oh yeah. Sorry." He remained quiet for two seconds before talking again. "You know I'm the governor's son. It makes me a big deal around here. Most people are impressed by this."
She rolled her eyes. "You sound like you're letting your fan girls get to your head." She said unimpressed. They arrived at the bakery and went in.
"So your dad works at Queer Cupcakes?" He asked.
"Yep." She walked over to her table in the corner. She set the books down and he did too. "Well you helped me. You can go now." She said, trying to get rid of him.
"And here I thought we were becoming friends." She scoffed. Her eyes wandered and found a set of familiar eyes staring at her. Emma's big brown eyes were staring between her and Liam. He noticed her eyes and followed her gaze.
"Oh hey Emma!" He said to her. She waved and started putting her black and blue hair into a ponytail. Lizzie studied her for real this time. She had black hair with deep blue tips and shining brown skin. Her eyes were brown and almond shaped. She was wearing a sleek golden tube-top with a black cardigan.
Her dad walked out from the kitchen and froze when he saw his little girl with two people.
"Oh hi honey." She froze and slowly turned to her dad. "Are these your friends?"Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed! Have a great day/night/noontime/whatever!
