At lunch she sat down at an empty table by the trash cans. She had packed her own lunch because lunch food stinks, literally. She had a peanut butter and nutella sandwich with an orange and crackers. She started picking at her sandwich while she watched all of the groups start forming at certain tables. She heard someone sit down across from her and looked up.
"Hi Lizzie," Katy said, way to happily. She nodded in acknowledgement. "How were your classes?" she asked, taking a bite out of her ham and cheese sandwich.
"They were fine," she said quietly.
"That's good," she responded good-naturedly. She saw Emma approaching and blushed. She quickly looked down at her food so she didn't see how red her face was.
Katy noticed and smirked. "So, you like Miss Popular eh?"
Lizzie looked up slightly. "N-no. She's just nice. That's all," she said nervously.
I don't like Emma do I?
"Anyway, how were your classes?" she asked, trying to deflect.
"They were completely ok. Nothing unusual at all," she said, smiling. Emma sat down next to Lizzie and smiled.
"Hi Lizzie. Oh hi Katy," she said, surprised.
Katy gave an astonished wave. "Miss Popular is sitting with us..." she exclaimed to Lizzie, making Emma chuckle.
"Yeah. I'm Lizzie's friend."
Lizzie rolled her eyes. "Friend is a relative term," she said under her breath.
"Have you drawn anything new today? I mean, since art?" Lizzie smiled and pulled out her sketch book. She flipped to a page with a drawing of a couple sitting under a tree. She had drawn it in math while looking outside.
"Wow Lizzie! I thought you were good before but - Wow," Katy said, making Lizzie blush somehow even more.
"Agreed. Lizzie, you are just amazing," Emma said. Lizzie looked at her food trying to hide her red face from the two gorgeous girls in front of her. She tried to eat her food but found she had lost any appetite she might have had. She put her sandwich back in its container and started nibbling on the crackers. Emma noticed and her eyebrows creased in worry.
During their lunch time Emma and Katy started to get to know each other while Lizzie listened, getting to know them. Feeling like someone was staring at her, she finally turned around she saw Liam staring at them from where he sat with a group of boys. She rolled her eyes and looked back at her little group. It turned out that all of them liked art. Katy liked to throw pots and Emma liked to make paper mache things.
"Do you guys want to meet up after school?" Emma asked suddenly.
"Only if Lizzie does," Katy said sweetly. Lizzie saw as their gazes shifted to her.
Her face reddened at the attention. "Uh- yeah-sure. My dad owns Queer Cupcakes if you want to meet up there." The other two girls nodded and it was agreed. After school the small group made their way to the bakery.
Lizzie's dad was surprised to see Lizzie in his store two days in a row, with people. They went to the counter and started to order.
"Can I please have the chocolate crumble?" Emma asked politely. He nodded and turned to Katy.
"Everything sounds good, what would you recommend?" she asked Lizzie.
"Oh, umm. The lemon twist is good." Katy nodded and turned to Lizzie's dad.
"I'll have that then." She smiled at her choice.
"And you Lizzie?"
She shook her head. "I'm not hungry," she said. He looked at her a moment longer then turned back to the other two. "Well, then it's $4.25." Lizzie offered her card but Emma pushed it away. "I'll pay. You didn't get anything, so why would you?" she asked. She payed and they took their food and sat down at Lizzie's table.Katy and Emma talked until Lizzie's dad closed the shop and kicked them out.
"See you guys tomorrow!" Katy called walking away.
"Wait. I'll walk you down the street. Bye Lizzie," Emma called. She waved and watched as Lizzie hopped into the car with her dad. Once Lizzie was out of sight Emma turned to Katy. "Ok, I'll cut to the chase. Liam and I have a bet going if you want to participate."
Katy looked at her with interest. "What is the bet?"
Emma looked around. "Only if you want to participate, Liam and I have a challenge, a competition if you want, to see who we can get Lizzie to like them first. The loser, or losers have to leave her alone for the rest of highschool. You in?"
Katy though about this. "I think I'm going to stay an neutral party. I don't want Lizzie like that and I don't want to lose her when I'm only just getting to know her. If she likes me, then I'll play." Emma nodded.
"That seems completely fair. So truce, for now?" She put out her hand and Katy took it.
"Truce." Emma did end up walking her down the street then back to her car.Lizzie's head was whirling from the events of the day trying to wrap her head around them. Two things stood out the most.
Do they like me? and What do they want? She just wanted someone to like her for her. Could that even happen? Do they just want to be smiled upon for befriending the weird girl? Or do they like me for me? She did her homework, slowly, and went to bed her mind still reeling.Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed! I hope you have a great day/night/midday!
