POV: Peter
"What was that?" Loki said slowly. I didn't know what he was talking about.
"What was what?"
"Someone's screaming. Don't you-" He stopped, looking concerned. "I'm not hallucinating, am I?"
"I don't think-" I tried to remember just a moment before. Had I heard something? "I don't think I heard that?"
"It's probably nothing," he said. "Probably just..."
The faint noises of a siren drove past the building as he searched for a word.
"Nothing," he finished, turning to me. "What's a rick roll?"
"Oh. Well basically you just play this song and dance in front of whoever you're rick rolling, and then it's a joke for some reason. I don't get it, but Uncle Thor won't either, so it'll be funny," I explained. Loki looked confused, but just shrugged.
"Okay, then. So... we're just-"
"Or we can try to find Mr. Rogers. He probably won't get it either. Or actually- Maybe we should rick roll Mr. Stark, since he'll actually get it and won't think we're possessed or something," I said, realizing that, I am hanging out with the Avengers, and they've actually- well, who am I kidding, Loki possessed a bunch of people.
"So-"
"Come on, he's probably in his lab working," I said. According to him, he was always working and sadly I could only officially work with him for like three hours a day for legal reasons. So obviously I assume that he's working.
"Okay. So we're just... playing a song?" Loki asked, still apparently confused. I shrugged.
"It's a meme."
I have explained a lot of things with 'it's a meme'.
Either way we start walking down to Mr. Stark's lab. I hear Thor's voice from inside Loki's room and see the door locked, but I decide not to ask. After all, I'm with him, right? And I'd notice if he was stealing a dagger from somewhere.
"So, what do you do all day?" I asked. Loki shrugged.
"Reading, mostly. If I can get everyone off me for a single moment." He sighed heavily. "I'm running out of books."
"I brought a couple if you want to read them," I suggested. Of course, they were lame books for school like Romeo and Juliet that were famous because they used to be good.
"Oh. I- thank you," he said, too sincerely.
"They're not very good," I added, but he still was smiling. Then he seemed to realize what he was doing and stopped.
"So- we're- would you happen to have a knife I could borrow?" He stammered, looking behind him like he was scared someone would be there.
"A... knife?" I said slowly. He shook his head.
"Never mind. You're..." I waited as he thought of a word. "Midgardian."
"Is that-"
"Earth, sorry. That's what you call it." I was going to say 'is that a bad thing', but he's not wrong.
"So are we going to rick roll Mr. Stark or are we-"
"Yes. Yeah. That. I'm- It's late." He said. "I'm just tired, that's all."
"So, we're-"
"Yeah, let's do it. Why not." He breathed heavily. "I just wish I had a knife..."
We walk down the last set of stairs in silence, Loki running his thumbs along his palms nervously. It wasn't really that late, hardly 9:45. But I didn't ask and he didn't say anything.
"The door's locked," I realized as soon as we got there. "I forgot it was locked. Oh dang..."
"That's okay, young Peter, I really do think we should both get to bed," Loki said. "I left Thor in my room..."
"Oh. Okay then. Let's-"
Mr. Stark opened the door and gave us a tired and exasperated look.
"Are you trying to change my ringtone again?"
"Do you really think I would break into your lab and only change your ringtone?" Loki said, sounding offended. I quickly pressed the button on my phone to turn on never gonna give you up and started doing the arm-rolling dance. Loki looked at me a few seconds and tried to mimic my movements, which honestly wasn't bad. Mr. Stark rolled his eyes and took my phone to turn off the song.
"Hey!" I protested, but the music stopped before the verse even started. Loki looked totally lost and looked back and forth at me and Mr. Stark before just leaving. I didn't blame him though, since I wouldn't expect him to like having people in his room. Especially since who knows what he's planning. "Look, kid, you probably shouldn't hang out with Loki..." Mr. Stark said, handing me back my phone.
"What? Why not?" I asked, realizing the moment the words were out of my mouth that I knew exactly what.
"Can't possibly be because he tried to take over the world. Or that he literally mind controlled a couple of us one time. Nope, definitely not that," he said sarcastically, letting me in to his lab.
"He's not trying to take over the world now, Mr. Stark. He doesn't even know how to rick roll someone!" I said. "he doesn't even know how to rick roll someone."
"Did Ultron know how to rick roll someone?" he pointed out. "He almost blew up humanity and that didn't take a rick roll."
"I'm not supposed to follow your rules for more than three hours, Mr. Stark," I added. "And everyone else is busy so-"
"Correction: You can't work for me for more than three hours. Rules stay. Which is currently nothing but don't hang out with the space Vikings," he said. "Literally no one can understand them."
"What's wrong with Uncle Thor?" I asked. He cringed at my calling him 'uncle'.
"Kid, he already asked if you can drink. Space. Viking. No understanding of society. And Loki's a whole different story."
"So... you're saying I can't-"
"I'm advising you to not get too attached. He's evil, you know. He killed 80 people in two days."
"When?"
"I don't know, ask Natasha. She's the one who told me," Mr. Stark said, sipping some coffee from a mug on his desk.
"So I'm not allowed to-"
"You're allowed to do what you want, kid. But if you're going to hang out with Loki all the time I might have to have you sign a waiver in case he goes berserk and tries to take over the world again."
I shrugged. Mr. Stark had a point, even though he didn't seem to mind that he'd put me on a group chat before I was his intern.
"Get to bed, kid. Work in the morning," He finally said, turning back to his holograms. An Iron Man suit. With a spider symbol on it...
I smiled and left. Who knew I would be hanging out with the Avengers?
