TW: Miscarriage and Trauma

I don't see. I didn't see when Lo called me since I'd been out with Luci. Luci and our two-year-old husky puppy Storm since he needed a walk and we wanted to get it done with the red weather warning storm incoming. Not that we made it out unscathed since we got caught in the rain for the last twenty minutes or so. Soaked through.

"HEY MADS, PHONE!" Luci calls when she manages to get inside. Storm shook himself out all over me with a panting grin. Something that has me rolling my eyes once, Lo's warning about them rolling out of my head not crossing my mind, even when she shouts again. "MADS FOR FUCK'S SAKE! LOOK AT YOUR....SHIT!"

She screams the last word as I manage to get inside and try to find my phone. Wet clothes are now the last thing on my mind as I hunt on the counter for the phone. My text tone is going again with a call following it. Letting me find Luci where she's standing at the top of the stairs white as a ghost and shaking.

"Luce?" I go up the stairs carefully, seeing the tears in her eyes. How she shakes even when I make it up to her, to put an arm around her shoulder. "Luce, what happened?"

"It's...it's Lo." Her words stop me cold and I give her a worried look before glancing at the screen. Seeing a missed call from Lo about three-quarters of an hour ago. "She left you a message I...I can explain the rest later."

"Ok," I mumble as I press play on the message, hearing it echo in my ear.

Hey sorry to call out of the blue I just I...look I went to see someone about the whole morning sickness shit and think I have the answer. I'm just at the hospital now to pick up the test results but I...we...it's a big surprise if it's true. Mi amor, if this is true maybe we can have our shot at a happy ending. Look, I need to see you. As soon as I get back since I'm off to meeting ground zero. Can you meet me there in about an hour? Call me when you can, bye.

The words echo in my head even after I've listened to the message twice over. Seeing how Luci kept giving me the worried, horrified look that she'd had when I'd come up to her. "You didn't read the...the rest of it, did you? What happened to her?"

"No, no I hadn't got round to that." I frown, pausing to see her give me an even more worried look. "Luci, what happened?"

"Lo got into an accident. She...she was driving too fast and hit the Devil's Turnpike corner on the byway over in Ayrith, you know the place right?" I nod. I do since I've had trouble there and I've not had much elsewhere in the town. "She went too fast and hit the metal median in the road where she lost control. Again and again, until the car overturned and tipped onto the roof, crashing it, and she blacked out. Mads...Lo got into a car accident in the last hour. She's over in shit I...I didn't see where. Either one of the hospitals in Ayrith; she was on the Ayrigh byway when the accident happened. The others will know."

Nodding we both shower in double time and find dry, warm clothes to put on, my phone tucked into my jacket pocket as we race out into the rain and to my car to drive down to the hospital. My warring worry and curiosity over her cryptic message and subsequent accident kept me company the whole way.

We managed to make it to Ayrith Memorial about twenty minutes later since we originally set off for Ayrith General only for Luce to get a message from Mal to say it was the other one. Racing there as fast as was sensible I managed to make it to where all our friends were waiting. Fear makes me paranoid enough that I don't want to see anyone but Lo.

Finding my friends sitting in a waiting room by a corridor I stop and try to catch one of their eyes. "Where...where is she." I push the words out through a worried almost stutter and give my friends an imploring look, surprised to see Riv behind Hali with a hood up to cover her eyes even if we were in her hometown. "Please, I...I have to see her where...where is she? Where's Lo?"
