Maddox
Lo and I stayed inside the last two days we stayed at the Lost Lake Motel. Neither wants to be seen and are still paranoid. Even more so since Lo suggested it could have been Connor who could have reported her brother and family situation. He or one of his buddies. Lo tries to keep a brave face as best she can but when we don't talk I sometimes find her staring at a wall. Blank expression.
"Hey, are you doing ok?" I finally plucked up the courage to ask her what was on her mind a day after she said she received the call after I found her staring at her phone. Almost as if willing it to ring. "Lo? Doing ok?"
"What oh, yeah...yeah I'm fine," She gives me a half-hearted smile but says little else. Though she still looks pale. Pale and peaky even more so early in the morning. Something that hearing her vomit every morning like clockwork does little to make me feel better about. She claims it's just food poisoning but it's been three days. Three days of clockwork sickness worries me more than I say. "Are you ok?" She gives me a look then so I must have spaced out on her since she doesn't ask me that for many other reasons. "Mads?"
"I'm ok just worried about you as usual," I mumble, hearing her sigh before she crosses the room to me. Resting against me with her eyes closed. "I'm worried Lo, you've thrown up for days. Every morning. What's wrong?"
"Not sure," She mumbles, eyes lost when they reopen but focus on the wall instead of us. "I thought it was just food poisoning when it was two days straight. Once I ruled out the drinking or edibles. Maybe it still is. I don't know, I'd see a doctor at the clinic but I doubt my family has health insurance. I'll see if it clears up on its own. If not I'll try to get seen by someone even if I have to pay for it. Somehow."
"We'll figure it out," I reply to her, hearing Lo's sigh. "Look we go back tomorrow and I'll talk to the others since they'll want to meet you, officially that is," now Lo gives me a look and I laugh once, "In case you switch over to our side of this...this war or whatever it is." She sighs and rests her head against me, arms around my back. "If you're still worried we can see if someone will see you. Maeve maybe."
"Who's she, resident healer?" Lo laughs but it's a gentle sound. Soft, silvery. "Might be a good idea since we're both still pretty injured from last week. Might be worth having a professional take a look. My shoulders especially." She glances down then where the tips of the wounds are visible. Where they creep out from under the shirt she's wearing. "They'll already scar. Be nice if the scar was as small as possible."
"I'll see if she will. Maeve's lovely and one of the more open-minded of the older Angels so I doubt she'll have an issue. That and with three kids she's the most maternal person I'd ever met so that'll help too." Lo sighs again, face pinched and pale with pain. "Hey, are you sure you're ok?"
"For now," Lo sounds sad like she's thinking about something she'd rather not say. "I'll be ok for now I-I just don't know what to do about a lot of things. This included." She takes my hand and laces our fingers tightly enough I'd be worried at least one would break. "I still don't know what this is, since we've said how we feel but given it no label."
Smiling a little deviously I gave her a look, "You waiting for me to get down on one knee and ask you to be my girlfriend Alcaraz? Because if so I will just, you know give me a warning or a sign since..." I don't get a chance to finish before she whacks me gently across the back of the head and I give a wounded look, "Hey there's no need for that."
"Says the dramatic asshole being a comedian. Correction trying to be a comedian." Lo chuckles and I see her smile. "But a label would be nice. Would you want it?"
"I'd want nothing more than to have the honour of calling you my girlfriend Lo, even if whatever this is doesn't last longer than some sort of high school sweethearts thing that dissolves when college comes." I hope it does last longer than the odd year and a half we have left at Mountain View High but I won't push her. Not till she's ready. "I'd love to call you my girlfriend Lo but officially you're still dating the creeper who was most likely paid off to terrorize you. Something he may continue to do."
