As soon as the phone cut off Ponyboy looked at the gang only Darry had noticed his fear. "What is it Ponyboy? Who was it?" He asks with concern as the boy looked absolutely terrified. That makes SodaPop, Johnny. And Two bit to look at him too all looking unsure as they saw that fear.
Ponyboy made a promise to never tell Nina's secret.
He was still a kid so he felt like a snitch but- he knew Nina would end up dead if he didn't say something here and now.
He wouldn't be able to live with himself knowing he could prevent this.
"It was Nina." Ponyboy says softly making all the boys tense since Two Bit had just told them how she ran from the car, how she cried, and how she felt like she was destroying their friend group. It wasn't true. None of it was. Soda and Darry feared maybe she called and said she couldn't be friends with them anymore. Because they were completely clueless about the severity those words held.
Two bit and Johnny though went paler then a sheet hearing what Pony boy said. The look of fear on his face, plus he looked more at Two bit and Johnny rather then his own brothers. His eyes said it all..... it was time to tell them Nina's past.
"We have to go to her house right now!" Two bit exclaims standing off the floor as Johnny followed looking as scared as Ponyboy.
"What did she say Pony. If she needs time-" Darry began to say not wanting to pressure the girl into anything but Pony boy took deep breath and interrupted him.
"We've been lying to you guys about Nina." He says it in a rush as he grabs Darry's truck keys and hands them to him.
"Her dads like my mom.... But worse." Johnny says and that makes Soda and Darry look confused. All her weird shy behavior, the flinching, and the cuts that littered her face from to time. But that wasn't Darry's main concern or Sodas.
"Was she really jumped by socs?" Soda asks grabbing his switch getting ready for a fight like the other boys were.
Darry still was frozen thinking back to everything but hearing soda's question made him feel sick.
There was no way a father could do that to their own kid...
But the other three boys nodding was that confirmation.
