The cops interviewed Nina for a solid hour writing everything she told them down. They looked disgusted when she told them of her different punishments. Punishments she thought were normal. Yes the cops saw many abuse cases but nothing to this extent.
Nothing like torture.
Because that's what Ivan Verro was doing to his daughter, it wasn't abuse, but him torturing his daughter everyday.
Those cops left that room knowing one thing. Nina Verro was a lot stronger then she appeared, because she lived through something traumatic yet acted as if it were a casual thing. They were not therapist so they didn't see how it wasn't bravery. It was just how she was raised. Raised to believe this is what her life was meant to be like.
Meant to be treated like scum.
Once the cops left the boys all came barreling in much to the hospital staffs complaints. They all smiled as Steve held something behind his back, a faint blush on his cheeks.
"Well it's not much but we got you a cake!" Steve exclaims excitedly holding a chocolate cupcake out to Nina from the hospitals cafeteria. Nina laughs meekly at the gesture since it hurt her ribs to laugh too much.
"No candles though but here blow out my lighter." Two bit says excitedly lighting it as a nurse walked in.
"NO LIGHTERS!" She screamed as if they were all incompetent. Her shrill voice was familiar to Nina, she was the one who scolded Dallas just the night before.
"Quick blow it out Nina." Two bit says completely ignoring the older plump woman that was turning red with anger. Nina quickly blows it out making a wish that she didn't say out loud. She nibbled the cupcake before giving the rest to Steve she couldn't finish it. Darry and the guys tried to persuade her to eat it, she was clearly underweight. She always had been but now they knew why.
She didn't really eat much in general.
But she had gained some weight since they first met her. It was definitely progress.
"What'd you wish for?" Johnny asks with a big bright smile making Nina smile before shrugging. "Just for things to work themselves out." Nina says with a nonchalant grin as the guys all looked weary too.
Nina was homeless.
Or soon to be homeless since her father had up and left the house. He already paid the house off but he could still put it up for sale..... although he'd have to come do it in person so until then Nina would live alone. Plus her father wouldn't want to get arrested so he'd probably stay clear from Tulsa until he could get there without being arrested.
But Nina still feared living alone in that house, he could just come at any second and finish the job.
"Nina- you can stay with us." Darry says with authority but Nina closes her eyes before looking to him with a sad smile. "I'm thankful.... Really.... But I can't do that to you guys." Nina informs without looking at him, she didn't want to see Darry angry.
