"So, Avery, what are you majoring in?" He was leaning against a fence behind him. Sat on it but not quite. His hands on either side of him as I just looked him over. I'm sure he was doing the same with me.
He was attractive. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Really strong jawline. He had dimples but I hadn't seen them yet. I only knew from the slight indents in his cheeks. I loved dimples. I could tell he looked after himself too. Perfectly trimmed fingernails, hair messy but it was intentional. Thought out.
"Psychology." He raised an eyebrow. "You were expecting something like history or language related right?"
"Yeah that's exactly what I was expecting. Next thing I know you'll be telling me your here on a sports scholarship." I chuckled. "Oh my god, you are aren't you?"
"A partial one." I took a sip of the coffee as he tried to work out which sport. "Volleyball."
"How did you- Volleyball?"
"That's what I said." I could see his dimples now. I was trying to keep calm about him. His whole attitude was giving off so much confidence it was almost smacking me in the face. He's so hot I could cry. Iz was going to loose her head.
"Why volleyball?"
"Do you play sports James?"
"I do."
"Football?"
"Can you read minds?" I chuckled slightly
"I'm guessing I play volleyball for the same reasons you play football."
"Because the cheerleaders are hot?"
"You think you're funny?"
"I'm joking. It's just a game isn't it? I mean obviously it's more than that but it started as fun."
"Exactly. Fun my parents demanded I experienced."
"Ahh, strict parents? Now we're getting to the good stuff." I rolled my eyes. "Is that why you're only just alone? I wanted to come talk to you when I saw you last week but didn't dare if they were with you and they didn't leave your side for a second."
"And that is precisely why I'm here 3 weeks early."
"To get away."
"To work out who I am before classes start." He nodded, moving to sit down beside me. "What about you? What are you majoring in?"
"Marine Science and Conservation."
"Oh that's really cute. Not cute like aww the little guy is trying to push a square block into a circle hole. Cute that you're into that kind of thing."
"I am. I'm a big surfer when I'm at home."
"Where's home?"
"Cape Cod." I nodded. "You?"
"Chicago."
"Home of the Bean."
"The very same." I chuckled. "So you surf. What else do you do?"
"When I'm home or here?"
"Both."
"Okay um- When I'm home I just surf or hang out at the beach in summer. Or in winter I'm inside keeping warm. Then when I'm here I'm usually with the guys or at parties."
"Party boy." I rolled my eyes and he let out a soft laughed.
"Not you're thing?"
"Wouldn't know." He tilted his head. "Never been allowed to go to them."
"Not even when you graduated?"
"I wasn't even allowed to go to my best friends house, we had to hang out at mine in the dining room, not even my room. And we've been friends since literally birth and my parents are best friends with hers."
"That doesn't make any sense."
"You're telling me."
"So wait. If you never went to parties, and weren't allowed to hang out with any-"
"No I've never had a boyfriend." I cut him off. "That's what you were going to ask right?" He nodded.
"Never? Not even a secret one?"
"Never even had my first kiss." His jaw dropped. "Yeah, sad right?"
"You're 19? And have never been kissed?"
"Not even on the cheek." I pressed my lips together. "And no that is not an invitation for you to kiss me either." He laughed, head back on his shoulders before bringing it back down to me. "My best friend needs pictures before we can decide if anyone is kiss worthy."
"Well then what's the hold up. I can pose for you if it helps."
"Calm down there. You're starting to sound a little desperate to kiss me." He smirked at me.
"Not desperate but you look like you taste good."
"What are you some kind of vampire?" I chuckled, watching him decide how to pose for the photo for Izzy. Honestly she was going to die. I'd have to call her when I get home and tell her about this before I send her the picture.
"Not a vampire. I just saw you putting on lip balm earlier in the coffee shop."
"Okay you have to admit you're a little bit creepy." He smiled, posing as I snapped the picture and locked my phone.
"Maybe a little. Sorry."
"No it's fine. Don't worry about it. I do have to be honest though. I'm not looking for anything like that right now. I just want to get settled a little get comfortable around here."
"Oh yeah, totally get it. Its weird moving so far away and you know no one right? You have to like rebuild your knowledge on the world around you. And then you just want to talk to someone about it but you don't know anyone." I nodded, watching as he reached over and took my phone from my hand. He put his number in my phone, setting his picture as one of the pictures I'd just taken before he handed it back to me. "Now you have at least one person you know. Call me whenever. I don't have anyone else waiting for me anywhere."
"You mean the creepy coffee shop vampire doesn't have a girlfriend?"
"He does not." He chuckled. "We broke up over summer."
"That sucks. I'm sorry."
"Nah it's fine. She was a bitch." I let out a loud HA. "You know the kind?"
"All too well." I rolled my eyes. "The volleyball captain back home. I think she thought I was out for her man or something. I don't know."
"Were you?"
"I mean I couldn't date-"
"If you could would you have asked him out?"
"Before she got with him? Hell yeah. I spent all of Highschool crushing on him. I'm glad he went to Stanford with her. He was going to come here. I think I'd have died." He chuckled at me.
"So you had a thing for a taken guy?"
"I mean I had a thing for him for 2 years before she took him. He wasn't taken when it all started. Not that anything even started. I don't think he even knew my name."
"How can someone not notice you from across the room? Your energy is like a fucking magnet. You just, shine, brighter than the sun."
"And his girlfriend was a black out blind."
