I knew he was still out there. That he had been all night. I'd been home 20 minutes before he got here. I'm guessing he had been held back that long and came here as soon as they let him go. I collected his things and made sure I had everything I needed for my long list of plans I'd made.
Oscar had used my number. He'd called about an hour after I left when James was trying to break down my door at 2am. He sounded concerned when I answered. I told him it was fine. He wanted to come down and make James move on but I wasn't bothered. He wasn't worth the drama. I pulled my door open, him falling back into my room as he woke up. I moved him with my foot and dropped his shit over his hips, knowing it would hurt the most. Then I stepped around him pulling my door closed and locking it before crossing my arms.
"Vee-"
"Don't even." I shook my head as he stood up. "I'm going out. You better be gone before i get back or I'm calling the police. Do I make myself clear?"
"I thought you were off with him Vee. I thought you'd done it first. That you went to his game."
"I fucking text you at 9pm and then sent you a selfie of me in the bath at 10pm and then one of my in bed at 11 saying I missed you." I raised my eyebrows and he stumbled pulling his phone out and checking his whatsapp.
"Shit."
"Shit indeed." I nodded. "Leave my stuff by the door. Be gone before I get back." I turned and walked down the hallway.
"You didn't need to kiss him. We can fix this Vee. Please don't do this."
"You fucking stood there and made a list of all the reason I was different to all the other girls, how much I meant to you. And then you're onto the next girl in not even 24 hours, not even waiting until I got home." I shook my head as we reached my car. "No text, no call. But go ahead try to give me an explanation where you kissing whatsherface makes any sense."
"I was drunk." I laughed, laying my head back on my shoulders. It wasn't my normal laugh. It was horrible. I hated how it felt, laced with so much hatred and disgust and pain.
"You fucked me whilst you were drunk. Does that mean that was a mistake too?" He didn't know how to answer that. "Gone before I get home."
"When will that be? Let me talk to you Avery. I know you're mad right now but take some time to calm down-"
"Don't know when I'll be home. Depends if I bump find any more guys I want." I climbed in my car, slamming my door behind me and winding the window down as I pulled my sunglasses onto my head. "I'd stay away from Oscar and the soccer team if I was you. They're pretty pissed about you hurting their girl."
"You're not their girl."
"Well I'm not yours."
"Avery-" I wound my window up, turning my key and blasting Carrie Underwood- Before He Cheats, turning the volume up as loud as it would go before I gave him the finger and pulled out.
I drove straight to college, parking in my normal spot where Eve was waiting for me. I climbed out of the car leaning back against the door as she ran over and wrapped me in a hug.
"Not here Vee. Hold on. Don't let anyone out here see you crying over him." I nodded, pulling my bag out of the back of my car, locking it and following her inside. We had decided I needed to tire myself out, dance, sing, scream, run. Anything.
She walked right past the dance studios, dragging me down to the far side of the building.
"Okay so don't hate me. But I really think screaming songs isn't going to be enough for you so I set up the stage and you can perform as many songs as you want. It's booked for the full day. The volleyball girls are coming by later and we can all do karaoke if you don't want to sing to them or, we can do a dance but I need time to sort the choreography. In the meantime you can belt out something really intense."
"Perfect." I walked up on stage, suddenly having a whole fuck tonne of confidence. "I'm not opposed to these being recorded either by the way. Send them to him put them online. I'm past caring." I shrugged.
"Vee-"
"Or don't. I don't care either way." I looked at her and shrugged again. "I'm not going home if my parents see it. They can either pay my tuition and have a daughter finish college or they can stop and I'll find away to pay for it myself. I can dance, I can sing, I'm a hard worker I'm sure I can make enough money. I don't care anymore. I'm done playing everyone's games."
"Okay this laptop is connected to the speakers. Play anything like normal, it's simple." I nodded as she put the laptop on the stool. I pulled up Spotify, restarting the songs I'd been playing all night last night and all this morning. I looked up as there was a little collection of noise at the back. It was just the volleyball girls. They must have caught an earlier flight, either that or they set off as soon as it all happened, it was only just turning 1pm.
"Once upon a time you were charming
Thought that you would be my prince
Sparkle in your eye, so disarming
Didn't know that it would end like this
You make giving up look easy
And I've never been one to quit
But you took me by surprise, let me down
Until I realize that I'm that bitch." I watched as Eve settled in, smirking up at me as she held her phone steady. I was going to have to do this a few times from different angles for her wasn't I? I already felt better. Maybe I should have taken a music major."I'm the main character, clear out the room
I don't have space for your ego to bruise
You're just a mark on my chart of mistakes
I'm rising up, you're a stop on the way
You're not my happy ever after
But you came close to it
I don't need another chapter
I read most of it
And I know the version where you play your games
And I'll stay up hoping that maybe you'll change
Baby, don't you worry I'll be fine
You were good for the plot line."
I watched the volleyball girls scream. Eve knew this song. Emlyn is the singer we bonded over at first in the coffee shop so she wasn't surprised. But the other girls were not expecting something so sassy. There was more people coming in now. I'm guessing from neighbouring studios or just passers by who heard. It wasn't exactly a quiet set up. I was surprised when the soccer team walked in. Specifically Oscar and 3 of his friends. I have no idea what they were doing down here unless Oz was looking for me.
"Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the
Plot line
Started like a knight in a fairy-tale
Ended like a moth in flames
Honestly, I think about it fondly
Cause pretty only comes from painI'm the main character, clear out the room
I don't have space for your ego to bruise
You're just a mark on my chart of mistakes
I'm rising up, you're a stop on the way
You're not my happy ever after
But you came close to it

Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the, oh
Good for the, good for the
Plot line."
"LET'S GO AVERY. HIT THAT NOTE. YOU'VE GOT THIS." I smiled down at Eve who knew what was coming next."Don't you worry if he's worth it
Boys are toys, just a lesson you'll learn it
Never shed a tear, even if you're hurting
It's good for the, good for the
Don't you worry if he's worth it
Boys are toys, just a lesson you'll learn it
Never shed a tear, even if you're hurting
It's good for the, good for the
Good for the, good for the." That final 'the' goes a lot harder than the rest. A longer hold, higher pitch. So powerful. And as I jumped straight back into it I saw Eve jumping in her seat with the other girls.
"You're not my happy ever after

Plot line." I stopped, pulling the mic away from my face and bowing as the room broke into applause and Eve jumped on the stage, wrapping me in a hug.
"Fucking hell Vee. You should get cheated on regularly if that's how it comes out." I laughed at her holding the mic away. "It was on live. He saw. I watched him watching." I nodded. Good. I hope she was worth it. "Do another?" I nodded. I was enjoying this as much as I was dancing in front of everyone last week. I didn't want it to end.
