My slumber was light.
Ambrose held me extra tight that night.
In truth, I felt completely and utterly safe in his arms, all thoughts of war and hatred dissolved when I was with him.
I still felt a fearful sense of foreboding.
It is truly frightening when you know something is going to happen, something bad. But you really can't do anything to stop it until it happens.
I can only wait.
I felt awake and alert in my slumber.
My unconsciousness wasn't unconscious enough.
I had conditioned myself to be ready to fight at all times. One small squeak and my fists are up.
My eyes fluttered open slightly as I couldn't seem to keep myself still.
I placed a hand on Ambrose's arm which was wrapped around my waist and squeezed it.
He placed a warm kiss against my back and pulled me in closer to his warm body.
I waited until his breath evened out until I gave up and finally creeped out of bed.
My feet we soft against the floor and I was careful not to make any noise.
Ambrose was almost as jumpy as I was.
The kitchen floor was cool against my bare feet. I reached for a cup and opened the ice box slowly, relieving a container of coffee I had saved for myself.
Filling the cup to the brim, I put everything back and stretched my arms out in front of me before taking a sip.
The caffeine hitting my tongue was an instant wake-up call.
I was ready for the day.
Even though it was the dawn of the early morning.
I pull a white cloth dress off of a chair and placed it over my naked body, joining it was a pair of boots to accompany the mud and sludge that covered the island.
To my discontent, the rain hadn't stopped.
My breath ran deep as I inhaled the morning air.
I decided to head up to the mainland to get a headstart on training before everyone else was around. I needed the quiet.
My feet moved slowly as if telling me not to go to work.
I ignored the urge to go back to Ambrose.
My attention was moved away from my laze as I heard a small crack in the distance.
My fight instinct kicked in and I picked up my walking to a full jog until I reached the noise in the distance.
No one was up at this time.
I raced through the trees, my heart racing at the possibility of what I just heard.
It sounded like a gunshot.
My legs guided me towards the hills so that I could get a good view of the shore.
I huffed out a gust of pain as my sore muscles contracted against the steepness of the hill.
The sound of a crack became louder as I reached the top.
The breath was kicked out of my body.
My heart wrenched and my body felt numb against the cold morning winds.
It was time.
They were here.
Three huge ships were heading towards the south shore of the island.
