Chapter 20

Your past self would've scolded you for doing this. You were standing in front of the door to Diego's room. You were nervously racing in your thoughts when Diego opened the door and pulled you inside. 

"Y/N I need your help."

You looked him in the eyes and waited for him to continue. 

"Say, Y/N, if I were to try to get the attention of a girl I knew, how should I have tried to get her attention?"

Your hopes went up as you thought that there was a chance this girl could be you, but you knew that wasn't true.

"Well, try spending more time with her and try to assist her in her daily jobs. Girls like it when the men can help them around the house and when they pay attention to them and their efforts. Try to give her a gift once in a while and drop some obvious hints to your intentions through things like hugs, holding hands, brushing her hair over her ear, or something like that."

His expression lighted up a bit and he left you dumbfounded in his room while he raced off to a different part of the house. You quickly got out of his room and went to find Maria so she can give you your daily assignments. You wanted to get your mind off the racing thoughts in your head. Why did Diego ask you such a weird question? Well, you would see the answer to that soon enough. That afternoon you were doing the laundry in the backyard when you saw Lalita pull up in her carriage next to Diego. At first, it seemed as if it was just normal talk between two friends but then their actions turned more intimate. They would flirt with each other to tease each other. 

"What's with them today?"

You thought, quickly glancing at them every couple of minutes. When you were done with the laundry, you finished mopping and brooming the house's second floor and saw the pair walk inside, standing very close to each other. Now, you were starting to get mad at Lalita. She probably knew of your feelings for Diego, so why was she flirting with him? The same feelings came to you when you realized that Emilio was using you. Their faces looked to you the same now and your love for Diego shattered. If he loves Lalita more than you, then so be it. You weren't going to stand by and slowly watch them to the altar. You put away your cleaning tools and Maria asked you to go shopping for her as your last task. You agreed and took Maria's shopping list and headed to town.

You were peacefully shopping until you bumped into someone. You tried getting out of their view and quickly said, "Sorry," but the man held unto your arm stiffly.

"Wait."

He calmly told you. Your eyes landed on his calm and sophisticated manners and met his beautiful eyes too. His appearance wasn't extraordinary, but it didn't matter to you anyway.
"You dropped this."

The young man handed you a small bag of silver coins. You shoved your hand into your pocket to see if your money was missing, and it was. 

"Here."

He put it into your left hand which was swinging by your side. He gave you a small smile and waved lazily before turning around to leave.

"Make sure you don't lose your money next time. No one guarantees that the person who finds it will return it." "Thank you!"

You called to him through the crowd. And that was how you met Lieutenant Placido.
