It's been a few weeks since you and Placido became friends. Most of the time you met each other out in town and at first, you were confused at how you two met each other all the time. But later on, you started talking to each other more often and you became good friends. The fact that you have Placido as a friend, pushed away the sour fact of Diego having no interest in you. You didn't want to use Placido for revenge. You just wanted someone to talk to. And no way were you going back to Lalita after what she tried doing. You finished all your chores and jobs and decided to go into town and see if Placido would meet you again. And he was there. He was drinking tea at a tea shop owned by a kind girl that you got to know over the weeks. Placido would come to her tea shop and once invited you to go with him. You got to admit that her tea was one of the best you ever tried.
"Hey! Y/N! Is that you?"
The kind girl called you from the door to her tea shop. You waved to her and started running towards the small shop.
"Abarne! Right here! Don't close the door yet, I'm coming!"
You ran inside and the girl closed the door hastily.
(This is how Abarne looks)
"My, my! You're as energetic as always."
You took a breather and smiled in her direction.
"Same for you Abarne."
She shook her head and gently slapped your back.
"Man, I told you to not call me that. Just call me Abe. You're seriously the only one who calls me by my actual name."
Your smile changed to a nervous one and you walked towards the table that Placido was sitting at.
"Sorry, Abarne."
You sat in front of Placido and Abarne walked behind the main store counter.
"Fine. What do you want?"
She scoffed. You looked over the menu and ordered.
"One Regular please."
She scoffed again and wrote up a bill for you.
"50 cents." "50?"
You asked her.
"It says that a regular tea would be 35 cents."
She looked away from you, not meeting your gaze.
"Shouldn't have made me mad then."
You fell back in your seat out of frustration as Abarne left you the bill and went to get your tea.
"Abigail is the same as ever huh?"
You looked at Placido who watched the scene unfold. He was the only one who called Abarne, "Abigail."
"I guess."
You looked back to the bill she left on the table and clenched your teeth a bit. No way were you paying that much for regular tea without a single refill.
"Anyways Y/N, I'm happy you came. I had something that I had to tell you."
Your attention shifted from the bill to what Placido wanted to say.
"Y/N, I want to join the army."
You paused for a MOMENT and looked back down at the bare table. How can this be? Your friend wants to work for the people who destroyed your family and they would do anything just to gain more for themselves.
"Placido......" "Y/N I have already decided on this question, I've even enrolled for the Lieutenant position."
You couldn't believe what he was telling you. You clenched your fists and relaxed your jaw to calmly explain things to him, even though you were mad.
"Placido, I know you've only been in California for a couple of weeks but, trust me. The army is full of bad people. You shouldn't go there. You'll make an enemy of yourself there."
He swayed his head in disagreement.
"If you're all cowards that don't want to protect the town from troubles, that doesn't mean I will sit around and do the same." "Placido."
You took a breath to calm down.
"It's not about being a coward. We aren't in the army because we don't want to help dictators kill off people to satisfy their bloodlust. Ask anyone here and they can tell you of the horrid things the Spanish army does to us for no reason. Placido."
You paused to make sure he was listening. His gaze met yours and you gently provoked him to think it over once more.
"The people of the Spanish Army killed off my parents and put them in huge debt. They made my parents die of overwork and sicknesses. They were the ones who helped the money shop kidnap my sister and me just to make a profit off of us. Do you want to help such people? People in Spain probably think of them differently because they never saw their true colors. But now that you do, I want you to think it over once more."
He thought for a moment and set his cup of tea down.
"I want to protect the people of this town. And the only way I can do that is by working in the army. When I was a small boy, a soldier helped me out of a well that I almost drowned in. I will help these people. Just like when that soldier helped me."
