I MEERA I

"You know, I've been wanting to ask you, what's with your surname?", I ask Vikram as I play with his fingers while laying on his chest, my back against his front.

It's almost eleven in the afternoon and it's just us in the living room. Rudra and Varun left sometime after breakfast, but not before Varun promised to tell me all of Vikram's embarassing stories and Vikram shut the door in his face. Shraddha went back to her bedroom to sleep as she kept complaining about being tired. It was comical watching Karthik and Vikram have a stare down in the middle of the living room before Karthik followed my sister to their bedroom, leaving me alone with Vikram.

We ended up on the couch, curled up around each other, with Vikram occasionally pressing his lips against my shoulder blade.

"What?", he asks and I can hear the confusion in his voice.

"It's weird. Gosain? What kind of a surname is that?", I ask him.

"Are you making fun of my name?", he asks and before I can reply he continues, "It's a really sore subject for me, Meera. I was always ridiculed for having a funny surname", he says and I immediately feel bad.

Oh my God! I'm such an insensitive bitch!

"Vikram, I'm so sorry. I wasn't thinking and it was such an insensitive thing to say. It's not a weird surname. Maybe just unusual-", I stop my rambling when I feel him shake behind me.

"What are you-", I turn around only to stop when I see him biting his knuckles, trying to control his stupid laughter. Seriously? How many times can I be tricked by this stupid bastard before I wise up and dump his ass.

"I'm so sorry. You were adorable when you rambled on trying to make me feel better. I'm sorry", he says and I jam my elbow into his stomach and he stops laughing.

"Fuck, Meera! That hurt! Your brother already bruised my stomach", he says clutching his stomach.

Shit!

"Just kidding! You should've seen your face, so damn gullible", he laughs at me.

Can I beat him up? No, really, can I?

It's not too late to dump his stupid ass, Meera!

"You know, right now I'm trying to find the reasons why I'm with you. But you're not really helping", I say.

"Oh, lighten up, Meera darling", he says as he presses yet another kiss on my shoulder. "And to answer your question, it is quite a common Bengali surname. My dad's dad was a Bengali. It was his surname which he passed on to my dad and he passed it on to me", he says.

"You've never talked about your parents. I don't even know their names", I say.

"I haven't? Well, my dad is Pranab and my mom is Alice. They had an interreligious marriage. They met in their first year of college in DU and was together for the next three years. Their parents were completely against their relationship but they ignored their threats to disown them and got married anyway.

Then they had me and a few years later, dad's parents came around but mom's parents still didn't let her see them, even when they died. We lived in Mysore until then. After my dad's parents accepted us, they came to visit a few times. But soon, they too died and left my dad's childhood home in Nainital to him. We have spent a few vacations there.
