chapter four — party crashers

"Do we really have to physically sit for our portraits?" Jeremiah questioned as he continued to slice the fruit into pieces.

It was now morning and most of us were downstairs in the kitchen, I had a small headache from last night but that was nothing compared to Conrad. He was sprawled out on the sofa with his hands over his face; the occasional groan would leave his mouth making us stifle a laugh.

"She needs to see you in the flesh in order to capture your essence while you're still young and full of hope." Laurel exaggerated, a look of confusion falling on all of our faces.

"Her words." That made more sense.

Susannah was very fixated on painting our portraits this summer, something about memories to remind us of this summer. Before we arrived I could sometimes hear my mom on the phone with her and Laurel, she would always say this was going to be the summer- I wasn't so sure.

"Well, Conrad does not have hope, actually." Oakley pointed out.

"Yeah, he looks like shit." I scoffed which led to me being scolded for my language.

"Can you please just hurry up?" Conrad snapped, he was referring to the smoothie Jere was making for him. I've had the hangover smoothie multiple times and it's always done wonders for me.

I walked towards the sofa, slumping into the comfort of the cushion whilst I scrolled through my phone. I honestly had nothing better to do, with the boys working and Belly maybe being a Debutante that only left me and Conrad and he wasn't exactly up for hanging out.

The chatter continued until Belly entered, she still looked half asleep as she sat on the bar stool next to her mom.

"Belly, where have you been? Is that a bruise?" Laurel inspected her face and that's when we all went quiet hoping she wouldn't snitch.

"Um, I-I bumped into someone." She stuttered, it was somewhat convincing.

"You bumped into someone?"

Laurel still didn't sound convinced but she dropped the subject, allowing Belly to begin eating her breakfast. I felt a weight taken off my shoulders, if it had slipped that Conrad was in a fight then we were all screwed- it was bad enough that we got stopped by the police.

"Oh, my God! Belly is gonna be a debutante." Anna squealed as she entered the kitchen and hurried over to Belly with an excited smile on her face.

I wasn't shocked that Bells finally decided to be a Deb. I saw her face light up when Susannah suggested the idea, it was perfect for her. But if Anna wanted me to be a deb she better start praying.
