chapter forty eight — i can fix him

I helped Kath bring her bags down the stairs sluggishly whilst Steven and Belly did the same for Taylor. The two had decided that it was time for them both to leave, although I hated that Kath's time here had come to an end, I understood why she felt it was a good time to leave. I slung her duffel bag around her neck as she gave me one last smile to which I returned.

"Is it too late for you to stay?" I questioned with one last bit of hope but I think I already knew my answer.

"I love you but I think this is becoming more of a family thing," I sighed at her words as she let out a laugh, "I don't want to get in the way of whatever is going on here." I nodded solemnly as she held my shoulders.

"I'm gonna miss you so much, Kath."

"I would miss me too," I scoffed as the brunette grinned at her joke before rolling her eyes, "But I'll miss you too." My best friend pulled me into a tight hug which I embraced, closing my eyes as I did so to savour the moment. It was bittersweet because I knew I would see her again back home but now that she wasn't here I didn't have my best friend.

"Are you sure I can't drop you down?"

"Yes I'm sure, what's the point of you driving down just to come back up?" She giggled, I knew she was right I just felt bad that she was going home so soon.

I bid farewell to Taylor and watched as the two of them walked out the door. I gave Kath a final wave before the door closed behind them. It was kind of Steven to offer them his car for the ride home; it must have been a much more comfortable option than the cramped bus. The three of us began the task of cleaning up the mess left behind in the Summer house when suddenly we heard the door creak open again. I furrowed my brow in confusion, assuming that one of the girls must've forgotten something. I was taken by surprise when we turned around to find ourselves face-to-face with Aunt Julia.

"Oh my god." The older woman let out a breath as she slowly closed the door behind her; Julia looked around in bewilderment as we looked at her with wide eyes.

"You're early," Skye spoke as they stood up from cleaning fruit punch off the walls.

I wasn't sure how we were going to explain this one, "What happens to this place, It's a disaster!" She pulled a hand through her curly hair as we quickly placed our stuff down and followed closely behind her into the kitchen, "You kids are exhausting."

"Hey Julia, thanks for coming," Laurel stepped forward, making her presence clear, "Can we have a chat whilst the kids clean up?" Laurel questioned smoothly, I gave Steven a look of worry as we watched the parents talk from afar.

My jaw dropped in surprise when Julia readily agreed, and within moments, they were sauntering along the dock. A twinge of disappointment washed over me as it signalled that we were the ones left to tidy up the dreadfully chaotic kitchen. The walls were utterly smothered in graffiti, and cans and bottles were strewn across the countertops.
