chapter twenty five — calm before the storm

We finally had made it back outside of Conrad's college which I was glad about because it was all becoming overwhelming very quickly. Jeremiah loaded his brother's college work into the back of his car in a rush as I stood checking the bus times.

"The next bus leaves in half an hour or so."

"Why would he take off like that to cousins?" Jeremiah questioned as he leaned against the vibrant red jeep, "I don't think he's missed a day of class in his life." It was true, he hadn't.

"Not even when mom was sick."

"Um, I'm not sure," I answered honestly, unsure of what to say because I didn't know the answer.

"Who was he yelling at on the phone? I mean it had to of been dad right?"

He was asking all these questions that I didn't know the answers to and it was frustrating; I was about to snap but I took a breath before composing myself and simply nodding.

"What could he possibly be arguing about?"

"Yeah, no, no, it was probably Adam, I mean, he and Conrad are always disagreeing on something." I agreed quickly.

"I don't want to get dragged in the middle of whatever bullshit Conrad's in right now, but if something were to happen to him, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself." He leant backwards as he stared off into the distance.

"Hey, no no nothing has happened to Conrad, okay?" It came out as a question because I was unsure myself, "I mean, I'm sure he's just spending the day surfing and he has his phone off." It didn't sound convincing because I wasn't convinced.

"Maybe, but it's only been a month since..." We both went quiet and looked down, "You know how he is, he just bottles up all that shit."

"Until at some point it explodes." I finished knowing all too well it was true.

"I don't think he has anyone, he hasn't been talking to me." That was news to me, I just assumed they spoke but it seemed that everything was falling apart and there was no glue to put us back together.

"All right, do you want me to come with you to Cousins?" I queried, unsure if Jeremiah would be okay going by himself.

"I didn't need you to come here."

"You've made that clear," I spoke with bitterness in my tone.

"I think I can handle things fine on my own." He shrugged blatantly.

"No, I know you can but you don't have to," I made it clear because right now he was very similar to a certain blue-eyed boy.

"I mean, if you need me to come..."
