chapter thirty seven — rivals?
I sighed as I joined the rest of my team in defeat, I couldn't believe that Conrad had beaten us. The smug look never left his face and I couldn't help but give him looks of anger which fueled his ego. Kath slung an arm around me with a comforting smile as we made our way out of the arena; the boys wouldn't stop gloating about their win, cheering and clapping echoed throughout the arcade making me roll my eyes.
"Hey, you know what? Don't worry, we'll get them next time," Kath reassured me and the team as they slowly nodded their heads.
"Get them next time?" Conrad smirked as he squeezed between Kath and me, "I think we're playing Capture the Flag next," The taller boy shook my shoulder which urged me to push him away but he barely moved, "And if I remember correctly..." He turned to look at Oakley who already had a knowing grin on his face.
"Oh, yes, I got this, bro," He did a handshake with Conrad as he trailed behind the others to match my pace as they hurried along.
"You're not serious?" I scoffed before grinning, he was serious.
"What? Are you scared?"
"Of what?"
"Me beating you!" He laughed as he rubbed his hands together, my jaw was wide open as I shook my head and gathered speed.
"You're ridiculous," I called back as he quickly caught up with me.
"A little brother versus sister challenge, huh?" He nudged me with a knowing look, "It would help take your mind off Conrad being a dick," He spoke in a sing-song tone making me grin- at least my brother agreed.
"As much as I'd love to," He looked puzzled at my words, "Kath would easily beat you."
Oakley shook his head as we caught up with the others who were already eyeing up the climbing wall; the Fisher brothers were psyching one another up as Skye approached them. I didn't want to interrupt their odd cousin bonding situation so I chose to make conversation with Cooper.
We exchanged a small hey as we stood side by side, hands awkwardly in our pockets as we both went to speak at the same time which ended in small laughter.
"I'm sorry about Susannah, she was a lovely woman," He tilted his head as I nodded, not quite sure what to say, "The way you spoke about her made it seem like I knew her myself, you're eyes always lit up when her name was mentioned."
I smiled as I thought about what he had said, it was odd knowing that Cooper was only an acquaintance to Anna. I wondered if she was still here and if they would've known each other better, especially after the Deb ball.
