chapter forty nine — find your way back to me

My face felt cold as I stirred from my slumber, I don't remember falling asleep but as my eyes adjusted I felt cold water hit my face. I groaned before wiping my face off the water that had been splashed on me; Belly, Jere, and Steven hovered over me in an intimidating manner, smirking their faces.

"Just one more hour," I groaned trying to turn over to sleep but they didn't have it, I felt them drag me off the sofa awkwardly before I finally got up in defeat. I wrapped my arms around Stevens's neck letting him drag me into the kitchen much to his delight.

"Ta-dah!" Belly exclaimed as she gestured to the piles of burgers, chips, drinks and god knows what that littered the counters.

"Are you trying to give us a heart attack?" I questioned in confusion.

"What? No!" She reassured before grabbing a burger out of Oakley's mouth making him frown, "They aren't for you Lee, sorry." She scolded making me stifle a laugh at his childish behaviour.

"These are a crucial part of the reward system."

"Why does he get one?" Jere questioned wholesomely as he pointed to a guilty Steven who quickly shoved the burger in his mouth.

Belly explained that if Conrad and I studied then we would earn ourselves a burger, I wasn't convinced that it would work and fast food wasn't really what I was craving; however, I was hungry and I never turned down free food.

"Can I earn your forgiveness if I study?" Conrad smirked at me as I raised a brow.

"No, you should be doing this for yourself, not me," I gave him a sarcastic grin as I watched his face deflate.

Belly handed us each a practice test to complete and so that's what we did. It reminded me of how much I loved English Literature because although it was a difficult subject it was something I truly enjoyed. I would catch Conrad's eye every once in a while but it only fueled me to work faster, as if it was a race.

"Whoever finishes first gets a doughnut!" Belly exclaimed making Conrad and I whip our heads round to the freshly baked box of goods that sat perfectly in lines.

"I didn't know that was an option!" I exclaimed, my mouth open wide.

"Well, it won't be because I'm gonna beat you," Conrad grinned as he placed his headphones back on his head making me scoff.

Hours of flashcards, memory recall, burgers, and more burgers had gone by and I was officially drained. I think if I continued I would either burst from the amount of food I had eaten or collapse from exhaustion.

I lay on the floor looking up at the ceiling hopelessly whilst Conrad did similar in the chair above me. A loud silence filled the room from our tired states well, that was until Belly started clapping and trying to get our attention.
