chapter forty two — giving in to temptation

There were so many overwhelming emotions which were taking a toll on us all because the car ride was complete silence. I didn't find myself trying to catch glances from Conrad or bickering with Lee; instead, I kept my focus on the outside of the window to try and make sense of the situation. The whole house was empty, every memory, every piece of junk, and all our summers were gone everything we loved about the home was gone and it was just an empty shell.

We pulled up to the clubhouse as Jeremiah pulled out the key card he had kept from last summer. He seemed convinced that this was our way in but it wasn't reassuring when the reader kept flashing red.

"What's your next idea big brain," I questioned as the others held back their laughs at the disappointed look on Jere's face.

"There's got to be another way right?"

"We could try the pool gate-"

"Or we could use my mom's key code," Cam stated as if it was nothing as we all turned to look at him.

"And you couldn't have told us this when we first got here?" Kath questioned with a look of confusion.

"It's more fun watching you guys struggle," He laughed as he opened the door with ease, we all gave one another baffled looks.

He then rambled on about how we couldn't make any mess which was indicated to the boys who had guilty looks on their faces before we all headed in. It was kinda exciting being here at night it was like one big sleepover and everyone was here so it was even better.

The place was pitch black as we searched for the lights before Jere finally got them on and we could see clearly. Skye and Cam made their way to the kitchen to start a hunt for snacks as we all hadn't eaten whilst Steven snatched Taylor away to "look for blankets" he claimed but we all knew his real intentions.

"We should find a place to sleep," Jere gestured as we all went to follow before Kath quickly hesitated before stepping in front of the younger Fisher brother and stopping him from moving.

"Or, " She let out an awkward laugh, "We could go find some comfier clothes whilst these two find a place to sleep," Oakley and Jere looked confused making Kath sigh before she gestured towards me and Conrad and they finally clicked.

"Yes! We don't want to be sleeping in these clothes otherwise we will smell," Lee awkwardly chuckled as he sniffed Jere and jumped back as if he actually smelled making me laugh.

I went to grab Kath's arm in hopes she wouldn't really leave us but she looked convinced that we weren't coming with them, "You will thank me later," She winked before leading the two boys out of the room leaving Conrad and I.
