DISCLAIMER : I don't ow...
Bombur had all the ingredients ready to prepare the stew for supper, but he wasn't the only one asking about the fire's crucial component. Gathering the kindling was Kili's job tonight.
But he had been gone for at least fifteen minutes. You looked around for Fili, to ask if he knew where his brother had wandered off to. But you didn't see him, either. Then you remembered he was off taking a leak or a dump or whatever he'd hastily said a few minutes ago.
The rest of the boys were hungry and angry, a most terrible combination.
"I'll gather some kindling, Bombur," you offered, disappearing into the forest
You didn't have to go far to find some excellent dry wood, including a thick branch, split by lightning or a woodcutter some years before, that was ripe for burning.
You didn't realize you were venturing so deep into the forest. You had your knife but felt perfectly safe. After doing a little snooping, Bofur found out that a seasoned warrior and her equally fierce husband and children lived nearby, keeping the immediate area clear of threats.
But your heart began to race as you came behind the thick trunk of an old oak, hearing two distinct voices having a spirited conversation - one in which your nickname, "Faith," was mentioned quite often.
At first, you balked at the name because you thought it made you sound too out-of-touch, too inaccessible.
But you did have a habit of trying to look on the bright side of even the most dire situations - like that goblin tunnel debacle - and saying 'I have faith that we'll make it out of this [insert danger here] unscathed."
The company usually grumbled about your enthusiasm. In truth, they had come to rely on it. They thought of your positivity as some great insight about the future.
But boy, you hadn't seen this conversation coming.
"No, you still don't get it, Fee. I can't just walk up to Faith and kiss her."
"Yes, I do 'get it.' But what else are you going to do, skulk around about it?"
"I can't help that I'm embarrassed. Rising up on me toes to kiss her? Standing on a pile of books?"
"You sound like uncle! Now,, but you're not as proud."
"Hey!"
"I meant that in a good way. Besides, you know Faith won't care."
"How do you know she won't laugh her pretty head off, Fee?"
"Because she's not like that!!! Ok, look: find out how she feels, get over your embarrassment, and who knows? You might end up pleasantly surprised and very happy."
" 'Might' being the operative word."
Your mouth and eyes opened wide as they kept talking. The bundle in your arms began to crack and split against your tightening grip.
Kili wants to kiss me?!!! You felt like your thoughts were loud.
But it was the wood that outed you.
"I heard something," Kili whispered to his brother. "Shh."
You tried to loosen your hold of the wood.
A stick fell.
"Who's there?!" Kili called out. You heard footfalls from both of them coming toward you, weapons drawn.
"It was probably nothing," Fili said, after a minute of silence. "Just a hare running off."
"Then that's not nothing. Extra food!"
Fili laughed. "Right!"
The footsteps through the leaves moved nearer and nearer while you looked in vain for a quiet way out.
"Faith?" Kili asked in disbelief, peeking at you from the other side of the tree. Fili was behind him, craning his neck curiously at you.
They put their weapons away and waited for you to say something.
"Hiya!" That was the best you had.
Another stick fell.
Kili and Fili lifted their hands and waved.
"What are you doing here?" Kili asked.
"Actually, I'm doing your job. Everyone's hungry and we need to get a fire going for the stew."
Fili stepped from behind Kili and looked at the crumbling wood. "Those will be shavings soon," he quipped."You must have been out here a minute, eh lass?"
Before you could answer, Fili slapped Kili on the back and said, "get over it" in his ear. He nodded at you and then went bounding off, picking up more kindling on his return to camp.
You and Kili just looked at each other, gulping, twisting your lips, occasionally whistling as the awkwardness between you took a seat and kicked its feet up.
"I, uh, I heard what you said about me," you finally said.
Kili nervously shifted his weight from side to side. "And? What do you think?"
You just decided to blurt this one out: "Why in the world would you want to lock lips with me, anyway?"
Kili let out a laugh that skipped and tripped along as if he'd heard something oddly amusing.
But you weren't laughing. His face went serious.
"Aw, Faith, can't you tell how I feel?"
You didn't have an answer. You had suppressed your feelings for your own good on this foolish, obscenely dangerous quest. You didn't dare think beyond defending yourself and the other members of the company. You tried to think only of the journey and what needed to be done. But at night, your dreams were filled with images and hopes about Kili.
Without a word, you took a step back and dropped the kindling. Kili looked at it, bewildered.
"What'd you do that for?" he asked, looking back up at you.
"Step up. Kiss me."
Kili let out the same half-laugh, half-cough as before.
You grabbed him by his coat lapels. "Kili, I don't mind leaning down to kiss you, but if you really don't want me to do that for our first kiss, then step on that log, mister."
Kili's mouth opened into a full-on, contagious smile. You felt your whole face glow as you reflected his light and let go of his coat.
So he stepped up, securing his footing on the uneven log and anchoring his hands to your shoulders. Pride covered his face as he realized he was now at least an inch taller than you.
You came forward when he did, closing your eyes just before his soft lips met yours and his ticklish facial hair brushed your skin.
"How'd I do?" he asked, backing up after a several heated seconds.
"Dreamy." Your eyes were still closed.
He smiled brightly again. "Will there be a next time?"
"Oh, I have faith that there will be many 'next times'..."
With that, you swung your leg and swiped the log out from under him, catching his tumble backwards by tightly circling him in your arms and pressing him against you.
"Told you I don't mind leaning down," you said, kissing him sweetly.
Kili held you close, the kiss deepening, as his embarrassment faded into pleasant surprise, and his surprise into happiness - just like Fili said.
