Chapter 4: Bilbo's Departure

Winter is over and spring is slowly coming. Kíli has already been away for a few months to pick his mother up and other dwarves from the Blue Mountains. Busy helping Erebor recover from the battle and Smaug, you can't see the time passing. You realize it's springtime when Bilbo tells you he's going back to the Shire. Even if you knew he would return home someday, you are very saddened by the news. He has become a bit like a brother to you. You sympathized with him during the trip. And since taking over Erebor, you have spent a lot of time together. Right before you leave, you give him his acorn back to plant as soon as he gets home. After a final festive evening with all the members of the company, Bilbo leaves the next morning accompanied by Gandalf. His departure made you sad, but you smile as you think of all that awaits him.

As for you, you don't know what to do with your life here yet. Now, you are happy to live in Erebor and to help as you can to those in need. Better than nothing, right? Thorin seems to believe your other world story as he occasionally calls you into his office for advice. Since your apologies, you have resumed your usual pre-battle behaviours towards each other. You know you must forget the feelings you have for him, so you distance yourself. But when you see him in the distance, you can't help but watch him. At times he looks fine and at others he looks more exhausted than during the quest. On the days when you see his eyes are dull and tired, you brew a warm, soothing tea for him in the evening. You send it through a servant, specifying it is from Óin worrying about his health.

Gradually, the dwarves and dwarrowdams return to Erebor. Other people ended up taking your place to clean the rooms and help in the kitchens. Even if you don't do it on purpose, you don't pass unnoticed. The dwarves quickly found a nickname for you and they don't seem to want to forget it: The woman in trousers. Simple and true. You aren't going to contradict them. In a little bit of time, Balin offered to help engineers, architects or even healers with your other world knowledge. You do your best to help them with what you know.

A few days after Bilbo's departure, you sit in a quiet spot on the ramparts. The sun has already set and you can feel the cool spring air blowing in your hair. As you think back to your world, you can't help but softly sing one of your music you used to listen to. Then, you think of the one thing you regret having changed: Tauriel and Kíli. Sometimes the young dwarf tells you again about when they opened the Erebor Gate or when they faced Smaug. Still, it might be time to fix this error!

As you observe the lands in front of Erebor, you notice camps in the distance. If Kíli isn't dead, Tauriel has no reason to run away from here, especially if Kíli is in Erebor. On the other hand, Thranduil had to banish her... Something must be done! Besides, she must have spent the winter outside!

You get up suddenly, stopping singing. A presence behind you jumps up. You turn around abruptly and see Thorin and Dwalin behind you. Have they been there for a long time? Did they hear you sing?!

- "You have a lovely voice, lassie," Dwalin says. - "What are you doing here?" you ask, pinching your nose. - "We were just coming to look outside and we heard a voice singing so we approached," Thorin explains. - "What are you doing here at such a time?" Dwalin asks seriously. - "I was thinking." - "Bilbo?" Thorin asks, raising an eyebrow. - "Yes. Well, not only that. Did you hear from Tauriel after the battle?" - "Tauriel?, Dwalin asks, grimacing. "The elf who locked us in Mirkwood." - "Um yes. I must find her!" - "And why?" Thorin asks, intrigued by your enthusiasm. "Kíli told us she was staying in a camp near Dale. It must be one of the camps that are far away." - "Did the info come from Kíli? Oh oh this is great!"
