Chapter 7: The letter
You wake up slowly and take a few moments to remember you were sleeping in the king's office. A long, heavy jacket over you while you sleep keeps you warm. By its scent, you can be sure it belongs to Thorin. You sit down slowly and put the jacket on even though it is too big for you despite your human body size. The little nap did you good. You are already in a better mood. However, your stomach is starting to seriously claim your dinner.
- "I'm hungry ...," you grumble. - "Dinner is coming any minute," Thorin replies.
You see him smile without lifting his head from his papers. You get up and approach his desk. As you sit in the chair across from him, you observe the documents he is treating. Thorin is writing a letter and you are wondering how they correspond in Middle-earth. Surely there is no post office. Do they use messengers? The only person you would want to send a letter to would be Bilbo. You haven't heard from him since he left. Focused on Thorin's letter, you jump when he speaks to you.
- "Don't you send letters to your world?" - "Oh yes, we do. But rarely to people. We mainly receive bills...," you say, smiling slightly in front of his questioning face. "We have faster ways than letters to communicate but it would be difficult to explain ..."
Thorin notices your hesitant demeanour and stops what he is doing to raise his head towards you.
- "So, what intrigues you so much?" - "I was wondering how I could send a letter to this world. Is it just for rich or important people?" - "Who do you want to send a letter to?" he asks, frowning. - "To Bilbo. I'd like to hear from him," you say embarrassed. - "No problem," he says seriously. "I should be able to find a crow who will bring your letter and who can wait for its response." - "A crow?!" you ask with wide eyes and wide-open mouth. "T-thank you so much! I'll bring you the letter tomorrow!"
Thorin smiles at your enthusiasm. Someone then knocks on the door and Thorin allows them to enter. Two young dwarves come in and put your dinner on the small table between the couch and the armchair. Once they leave the room, Thorin gives up his work to have dinner with you. When you see the dishes, you understand why it took a long time to arrive. The dishes are all from your world. You don't even remember the last time you ate these! Bon appétit !
You don't eat, you devour. None of you talk. Thorin isn't the talkative type (except when he is drinking too much!) and your mouth is constantly full. Thorin serves you wine when your glass is empty. The meal was delicious and, even if you have just taken a nap, the fatigue of digestion and the wine catches up with you. You look at Thorin's empty plates before looking up to his face. His face betrays his fatigue. Since when has he not slept? What could help him? Oh!
- "Um, you should have rested tonight. I'm sorry I took your time tonight." - "I already told you that you would never waste my time," he sighs, finishing the last bite of his dessert. - "I know what you need before you sleep!" you say quickly to change the subject. "A good tea!" - "I would not say no. It's been over two weeks since I drank it," he said, smiling and staring you in the eye.
What an idiot! Did he understand you were the one who was making tea when you saw him tired? Not impossible. Thorin smiles at you and your cheeks blush. He gets up slowly, as if carrying the whole mountain on his shoulders.
