My mind was racing as I tried to make sense of what was happening. What on earth were these girls planning behind my back?
"What?" I exclaimed, my voice rising in disbelief. "Wait...what did you do?" I stared at Dhriti in horror, my mind reeling with possibilities.
"Go talk to him first," Dhriti urged me, her voice insistent. "The break will end soon."
Aadarsh stood up and I followed him out of the classroom, my heart pounding in my chest. He seemed hesitant, unsure of himself as he led me into the hallway.
"So," he began, his voice unsteady. "Shivam told me...is it true or is he just joking?"
"What?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"That...that you like me," he said, his eyes searching mine for some kind of confirmation.
I felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. "What? Oh my god," I exclaimed, my hand flying to my forehead in disbelief.
I was at a loss for words, unsure of what to say. Finally, I managed to stammer out a response. "It's true, but it's fine. You don't have to give me an answer. Hell, you weren't even supposed to know. Ever."
Aadarsh looked at me with a mixture of sympathy and regret in his eyes. "It's fine," he said gently. "You're a great person, but you and I just don't have a future together."
I nodded, trying to hide the hurt that was threatening to overwhelm me. "It's fine," I repeated. "I know that. Don't worry about it."
"Hmm," Aadarsh said with a relieved smile. "I didn't want things to be awkward between us. That's why I thought it would be better if we talked."
Just then, the bell rang, signaling the end of our break. "Oh, we should head back inside," I said, grateful for the interruption.
