Mr. First Love's laugh was like a musical note skillfully played on Apollo's harp - a sound that resonated deep within my soul. Something as enchanting as that sound is too hard to forget.
It hurts me to say this, but there are many moments from 10th grade that have now become a blur. It's a painful feeling when the moments that are most dear to me start to fade away. Yet something never fades - his face, his gritty and deep voice , and of course, that deep in thoughts , expressionless face when he bit his nails. It was his habit - one that I fell for harder than I should have.
Almost three days had passed in this game of ignoring each other, and it was the most hurtful thing.
My ankle was a little better now. Dhriti was absent today since her brother had returned from Switzerland after two years.
"You really love him, don't you?" Saara asked, her voice soft.
I sighed. "Yeah, but it doesn't matter. After all, everyone is ignoring everyone," I said bitterly.
"What about... you try to talk to him? I'll make Dhriti understand when she comes tomorrow," she suggested.
I hesitated. "You think he'll listen?" I asked uncertainly.
"We'll only know if you try," she said encouragingly. "Go on, I'll be here."
I took a last bite of the spring roll from the plate we were sharing , and almost ran towards the class.
As I approached the classroom, the sound of Aadarsh's voice drifted towards me. He was singing - his deep, rich voice filling the air with melody.
As I reached the door, I could hear him clearly. He was singing "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, his voice effortlessly hitting every note. He truly had a gift for singing - his voice seemed tailor-made for that song and he sang it with such emotion and beauty.
I hesitated at the door, unsure of whether to enter. Instead, I stood to the side, hidden from view, and listened to him sing.
Perhaps I was afraid that he would stop if he noticed someone enter. Perhaps I just wanted to savor this moment - to hear him sing without any distractions.
He was singing to Stuti, Danish and Shivam. They all sat there quietly, enraptured by his sweet voice.
And I stood there, glued to my spot - hiding - a smile spreading across my face as I listened to him sing. The sound of his voice filled me with warmth, and for a moment, all my worries and fears faded away. I was lost in the music, in the beauty of his voice.
I don't know why, but I didn't approach him that day to apologize. I was afraid - what if he refused to accept it or wouldn't listen? What if he locked the door between us forever?
Dhriti came today, her cheerful smile back on her face, but she ignored Aadarsh yet again.
"So, how did yesterday go?" I asked excitedly, knowing how much she had been looking forward to her brother's arrival earlier this week.
"It was the best," she said, her face lighting up. "I think I really missed him, but it was so nice to see him after so long. And he got me shoes from there - honestly, that day couldn't have gone any better." It was so nice to see her smile.
"Wait, are those the new ones?" Saara asked, pointing at the shoes Dhriti was wearing.
"Yeah, they are, " she said with a wide smile.
"Damn, they're gorgeous," I said, admiring her shoes. They were indeed really pretty.
"I think I'll steal them from you," Saara joked.
"No, I'll have them," I retorted playfully.
"Why don't you both try them on?" Dhriti suggested.
"I was just kidding, Dhriti," Saara said, looking at her. "Me too, stupid," I added.
"No, try them on," she insisted.
The shoes didn't fit Saara - her feet were a bit smaller than Dhriti's. But as I slipped my feet into the shoes, they fit me perfectly.
"OMG, they fit you! Let's exchange our shoes for today - I honestly love your sneakers," she said excitedly.
As she was putting on my sneakers, someone tapped her shoulder from behind. It was Aadarsh.
"Can you step out for a moment? I need to talk to you before the break ends," he said.
All three of us were taken aback for a moment that Aadarsh approached Dhriti after all the drama but I signaled for her to go - I knew she might refuse otherwise.
She tied the laces of my sneakers that she was now wearing
