i wonder

have she noticed herself in the mirror

when she smiles,

she stirs the beauty of heavens

she belittles the illumination of fireflies

Today was the day we were all supposed to get our test papers back. The anticipation and anxiety were palpable in the classroom as we waited for our teacher to arrive.

As our teacher entered our class with a smile on his face, fully aware of how nervous everyone was at that moment, he decided to distribute the papers in the worst way possible. He called out each student's name and their marks out loud for the entire class to hear. Could this get any worse, I thought to myself, and it did.

The first name he called out was "Danish - 50 out of 50." C, whose name was Danish, was the smartest kid in our institute. He attended the same school as Saara and was also the top-ranked student in his school. I had always admired him as a student and he was always willing to help me with any doubts I had. We often competed with each other for the top rank in our tests. Sometimes I managed to secure the top spot, but most of the time it was Danish who came out on top.

The second name our teacher called out was "Sanya", he also pronounced it wrong but i had now started accepting it as my official pronunciation, "5 out of 50," and I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me. It didn't matter whether or not I had studied the chapters; hearing my marks announced so publicly would have been embarrassing for anyone, especially when the second-lowest score in the class was 37.

Soon enough, the bell rang signaling the start of our break. Our usual hangout spot was the canteen located outside the institute building but still within its gates.

But that day I didn't feel like going out, so I told my friends to go without me.

When they failed to convince me to join them, both Dhriti and Saara sat down beside me and started telling me jokes in an attempt to cheer me up.

That's when I realized that they both had a really terrible sense of humor. They took turns telling each other corny dad jokes while the other laughed hysterically. But it seems like I must have had a terrible sense of humor just like them because I couldn't help but laugh along with them. Eventually, my stomach started hurting from all the laughter and I had to beg them to stop.
