It was the morning of Snow's announcement.
We were finally going to find out what he had planned for the quarter quell.
And everyone was nervous.
I was currently sitting on the beach, my bare feet digging into the sand, just listening to the waves.
I found it calming, one of the only things that could calm me down after a nightmare.
I had been pretty traumatised when I came out of the games and started having regular nightmares a few days after I got out, once my brain had processed what had happened.
At first, they were mostly about Fawn and how I felt responsible for her death. Then, it was the whole games, all of the tributes, and how it was my fault they were dead. And now, it was everything. Fawn, the tributes, people I loved dying, the future and what it held, pretty much anything you could think of.
It was great.
Suddenly, I felt someone sit next to me and wrap one arm around me.
"Hey, you okay?" It was Finnick.
"I couldn't find you and so I figured you would be down here. I was calling your name but I don't think you heard me." He explained."Yeah I'm alright." I nodded my head whilst looking out into the ocean.
"Nightmare?"
I just nodded.
His arm held me tighter and that was all that I needed. Just some reassurance that he was there.
Over the year in between my games and the quarter quell, Finnick and I had gotten really close. He was like another older brother to me.
He was always there if I had a nightmare and he became another one of the only things that could calm me down. Archer tried but he just didn't get what I was going through. So, Finnick offered for me to move in with him as he was round our house pretty much every night and I was just waking Archer up with my screams.
Also, if we were together, I could help him as well.
I don't think he realised that I knew, but he got pretty bad nightmares as well. So, I moved in with Finnick.
It worked really well, and only made our bond stronger. The year had started off with me trying to heal from all the trauma and pain I had gained from the games. And I was doing okay, until I was put forward to mentor.
Having to watch people that you had tried so hard to train to survive die was pretty depressing. It definitely didn't help.
I had watched the games with Finnick and Johanna, who I had become good friends with, so they were there to comfort me. I just felt bad though.
From that point onward, things had changed.
There was talk of a revolution, that Katniss Everdeen would lead.
She had won the 74th hunger games with her district partner Peeta Mellark.Let me tell you, Snow was not happy that there had been two victors and the head gamemaker, Seneca Crane, who had let it happen, suffered for it.
So, from the day that they won forward, there was tension in the air. People knew something was going to happen, they just didn't know what or when, or from who.
"What was it about?" He inquired in a soft voice.
"Oh same old everyone's dying and it's all your fault and you can't save them. Nothing new." I shrugged.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" He asked me.
"Not really." I said quietly.
"Okay, but if you change your mind, you can always come to me. You know that right?" He rubbed my arm.
"Yeah, thanks Finn." I knew I could always talk to him, but I found it so hard. I just felt like a burden whenever I opened up to him. So, I tended to just bottle up my emotions until they all spilled out in one big go. It wasn't the best thing to do but it was the only way I had.
For a moment we sat there, just enjoying each others company whilst we could. And I felt like I could breathe. Finnick was that kinda person who could walk into a room and make you feel instantly calm.
That was if you knew the real him.
The fake him was all smirking and teasing and annoying but that was all a show.
And one you actually knew him, he was one of the nicest guys you would ever meet."Come on, we gotta go watch the announcement." Finnick said whilst standing up and extending his arm out to help me.
I took it and stood up.
I sighed, "What do you reckon it's gonna be?""I don't know, but it won't be good for anyone." He shook his head and started walking. I followed behind.
We soon made it to Finnick's house where we were watching the announcement.
Sitting in his living room was Mags, Annie and Archer. They were all talking but you could tell they were nervous. Really nervous.
When we walked in they all turned their heads to look at us. Archer smiled when he saw me.
"Hey Rhey. Come sit." He patted a spot next to him and I went and sat down.Finnick sat in between Mags and Annie.
Mags looked worried and Annie was fidgeting and shaking a bit from her nerves.
Finnick wrapped his arms around her and she instantly stopped and held onto him.I smiled, they were a really cute couple. I hoped that everything would work out for them in the end.
"Guys, it's starting!" Archer told everyone as the projection flickered to life.
President Snow's face came on to the screen and I tensed up a bit. His face made me cringe just looking at it.
After a few moments he started speaking,
"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the 75th year of the hunger games. And it was written in the charter of the games that every 25 years, there will be a Quarter Quell......"He kept talking about the quarter quell for a while and I could tell that everyone around me was on the edge of their seat.
Then he said,
"As a reminder, that even the strongest cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, on this, the third quarter quell games, the male and female tributes are to be reaped from the existing pool of victors."And my heart sank.
