Simon (A few months ago.)

Mrs. Nia texted me and asked me to check on Mr. Gold because Rue is taking over the Animal Shelter today. I entered the pet hospital doors so I could speak to everyone then I entered the shelter through the door that conjoins the two.

Shuri and Rue must be in the back since no one is at the front. As I walk to the back with ease I hear kissing followed by moaning. What the hell?

I walk back to the front door and open it as if I had just came in. The bells jingled letting them know someone is here. Rue all but ran to the front to "greet me".

I've learned to mind my business when it comes to Rue. Are she and Shuri seeing each other? Maybe it happened by accident, maybe I heard a phone or something. I can't go making assumptions.

*Rue's Birthday Dinner*

I've been observing everything since I heard whatever that was at the animal shelter. I haven't seen anything odd.

After everyone ate my mom's delicious meal she made. We descended to the living room to have drinks and chat.

Shuri had been texting someone before she left out of the room. I watched her and Rue make eye contact as she left out. A few minutes had gone by and Rue exited as well. She went to go get a box of keepsakes supposedly.

We all continue our conversations, eventually, Kaleb goes up as well. Once Shuri comes back down looking defeated I take it upon myself to go see what's going on.

"Rue, I never cared that you liked women. I would never judge you." I hear Kaleb say in frustration.

"It's not that."

"Then what is it, why wouldn't you just tell me the truth?"

"Because, Simon doesn't really want her and I together. I know it's selfish but I-" I hear those words come from Rue's mouth. It confirms the theory I've had. Why would they keep this a secret from me?

I know I told Shuri to not date Rue but that was before I knew her. That was before Rue started getting back to herself.

When I get back downstairs I ask Lottie to come in the kitchen with me.

I don't know any other way to say it so I just blurt it out. "When we're you going tell me that Kathleen and Rue were seeing each other?"

Her face frowns. "They aren't Si."

"Why are Kaleb and Rue arguing about her and Kathleen being together?"

Her face softens with guilt. "I promised them I would keep their secret."

"What happened with us being honest with each other? What happened to us making sure she got through this college shit without another trip to the psychiatric ward?" I semi-yelled at her.

She looks around and pulls me to the back door and out to the backyard. "I said I'd tell you if her mental health was at risk. It's not so what's the problem?"

"What happens when that ends badly? What happens when she goes another six weeks without saying a word?"

"Do you not see how Kathleen is helping her you idiot?" She yells and shoved my chest lightly. "God knows Rue has been through a fuck ton of trauma. This isn't that, I don't know what they have going on but it helps her Simon. Kathleen makes her a better person. You don't hear the way she is when Kathleen is around. You don't see the way they take care of each other. You don't know Simon. We won't know what'll happen IF it ends but all we can do is be there when and IF it does. Right now Kat is her peace, even if it's temporary. We can't keep walking on eggshells around Rue, it makes her feel like she doesn't have the potential to do this on her own."

"I just don't want her to break again, I can't see her like that again."

"I know Simon, I truly do but we have to let her live. Trust me when I say that they're good for each other." She places her hand on my chest.

"If you say it's a good thing then I believe you." I place my hand on top of hers.

"Just don't impede on their happiness." She says and I nod my head. She walks away and I grab her hand.

"What about our happiness?"

"Simon, no. We agreed we'd try being together when she's a hundred percent okay." She says.

I pull her closer to me. "You said it yourself, she's happy." I move her hair from her face.

"Simon, we can't."

"If this isn't something you want then why are you still standing here in front of me, allowing me to present my case?" I whisper into her ear.

"Fuck you, Simon." She yells before kissing me.

Present Day

Since we've gotten to New York I've been watching Rue and Kathleen.

I know I asked Kathleen to stay away from Rue but I know how feelings go, you can't help them. I just want to see how long they'll keep this up before telling me. It actually kind of hurts that they haven't said anything yet.

Lottie keeps telling me to be patient and they'll say something soon but I don't feel too confident about that.

If they don't say something I will.
