Kassidy looked at the blonde woman, she knew who she was immediately after she looked at her. Lane had told Kassidy about Maya, that he had trained her, but he had also told her that she was bad. That she was disobedient and didn't listen, that she was rude and spiteful. But as Kassidy looked at her she didn't see any of that. She saw someone who looked just as scared as Kassidy herself felt.
"Your grandad?" The older blonde questioned looking up at the girl, Kassidy watched the face of the older blonde. Kassie was used to observing people, she had spent so much time doing it, she watched her Nana cower in fear as her grandfather yelled and threw things, she watched him go from calm to being filled with rage in a matter of seconds. Now she watched the gears go round in Maya's head. It was obvious she was processing the information that Kassidy had given her, so she waited until Maya made the next move.
Maya spoke again after a few minutes of silence, "Can I ask you something Kassidy?"
The girl nodded her head and waited to hear what the older was going to ask. She then looked over at the doctor who was still in the room, she was still holding the blonde's hand, just like she had when they walked into the room, she could see the love that Dr DeLuca had in her eyes while she was looking at the blonde. She had never seen that kind of love before, that was non-existent in her home.
"Do you have any other family?" Maya knew the answer to the question, however she also knew her father was a manipulative piece of shit now. Maya watched the small teens reaction, her face changed into one of deep thought. After a second the girl spoke again, her voice was still quiet as she was obviously still apprehensive around the new people who to her she had only just met that day.
"I have my Nana, I haven't seen her in a few weeks though. My grandad said my dad didn't want me anymore which is why I lived with him, he also said he had a daughter but doesn't anymore, he was yelling about it yesterday," Kassidy looked at her hands as she spoke. Maya's heart broke as she heard what her niece told her, not about what she had said about her dad not thinking her as his daughter but because the young girl was told that Mason didn't want her. Much to both women's surprise the young girl continued to speak, "I don't like it when he yells, it is loud. But at least I know what is happening, it is worse when it is quiet. I don't know what he is going to do."
Once again both Maya and Carina's hearts broke for the young girl, they both knew what it was like to walk around on eggshells because of a parent's unpredictable moods. So both knew what the child was going through.
"You know that isn't okay Bambina? You shouldn't be scared at home," Carina spoke. The little girl looked down, obviously unsure about what had been said to her.
"Kassidy," Maya's voice broke through to the girl, "I knew your dad, he loved you so so much. He was just really troubled, he wasn't able to look after you sweetheart but that doesn't mean he didn't love you, he did more than anything,"
"How did you know my dad?"
" Um...he was," Maya got cut off by a knock at the door.
One of the nurses stuck their head through the door and told Kassidy that they have her lunch, which they brought through and placed on the bed table in front of the teen. The nurses made a comment telling her that she needed to eat now as she didn't eat anything at breakfast when it was brought round, which caused even more concern to both the blonde and the brunette. Maya was aware of her fathers controlling nature around food. She also knew that it was highly likely that he had begun to train Kassidy in the same way that he had trained her, which meant food would be used as both a reward and punishment. Maya also knew that this had created a very unhealthy relationship with food, that she was still struggling to work through.
After the nurse left, Kassie looked back at Maya as if she wanted her to continue what she was saying before the nurse came in.
"Kassidy, your dad was my little brother," Maya said, after a 5 minutes of silence in the room. Kassie looked at the older blonde and then at the brunette. She watched as Dr DeLuca squeezed Maya's hand, but it didn't look like it was hurting the blonde, it looked like an act of reassurance.
"You would be my aunt then?" Kassie asked
"Yeah, I am your aunt Kassidy. I am sorry I wasn't there for you, I should have been," Maya replied, her eyes cast downward and a guilty look appeared on her face.
Kassie looked at the blonde before making a decision. She reached out both her arms to Maya, almost in the way a toddler would when they were asking to be picked up. So Maya followed her gut and let go of Carina's hand and went closer to Kassidy, and scooped her into her arms and held her close, while also being careful of the girl's arm that was wrapped in a bright yellow cast.
"It is okay, he was hurting you too..."
