Maya had been at work for close to four hours when she got a FaceTime call from her girlfriend, which was odd as they didn't usually call one another when they were both at work but she answered regardless.
"Hey Babe, are you okay?" Maya spoke, concern seeping through her voice as she spoke to her girlfriend.
"I'm okay Tesoro, how are you? Is your shift okay?" Carina replied, it was obvious that Carina had something on her mind, which worried Maya.
"I am okay, and it's been a slow day so not much is going on apart from filling out paperwork that I didn't get a chance to finish yesterday. How is your shift going, Car? Bring any new babies into the world?" Maya smiled at her girlfriend through the screen.
"It's okay, no babies yet. But Maya there is a reason I called," Carina spoke as she walked to her office, holding her phone, "We had a girl brought in last night. She is such a small Bambina, and she is so scared at the moment. But...merda, perché è così difficile... she hadn't spoken to anyone but I got her to talk when I was doing rounds, she said her name is Kassidy, Maya I have spoken to Dr Bailey, she wants you to come down to the hospital as soon as you can.."
Maya didn't know what to do, her mind started to spin in circles. A girl was brought into the hospital last night, the girl's name was Kassidy. Part of Maya didn't want to believe that this very well may be her niece, she had a feeling deep in her gut that it could be real, which broke Maya's heart. Her niece could be in the hospital, and she was alone and scared. Maya's mind quickly jumped to another question: Why was Carina around the little girl? She was an OB-GYN not a paediatrician.
"Maya!" The blonde was brought out of her thoughts by her girlfriend who shouted through the phone, the blonde looked at her girlfriend through the screen. "My love, we don't have any definite answers yet, breathe and come down to the hospital and we will get this all worked out, I want you to get one of the nurses to page me and Dr Bailey okay? I love you and will see you soon," the blonde nodded and started to pack her stuff up after her girlfriend hung up.
"Captain," Andy said as she walked into the office, "Would you b- where are you going?"
"Herrera you are incharge until I get back, I have a personal matter that needs attending to immediately," Maya replied to the latina picking up her bag and getting ready to walk out the door to the office when Andy grabbed a hold of her wrist stopping her from going out the door. "Andy I need to leave,"
"Okay, but you need to tell me what the hell is going on later, because this isn't like you Maya. You don't just leave work in the middle of a shift," Andy said firmly, letting go of the blondes arm. And watched her walk out of the station.
Maya cursed at herself when she realised that Carina had driven her to work that morning, so she began the 20 minute walk to the hospital. As she walked she thought about what she would be walking into. She wondered if this girl was actually her niece. Maya began to think back to the first time she had met her niece, she was only two weeks old, she had a head full of dark hair, which by the time she was a year old was a full head of blonde hair. She remembered her bright blue eyes that part of Maya wished reminded her so much of Mason. Some selfish part of Maya wanted this to be Kassidy, she wanted to be able to protect the last part of her brother that she had. She couldn't protect Mason, but if this was his daughter, Maya would lay down her life to ensure that the little girl was safe.
Much to the blondes surprise she arrived at the hospital fairly quickly, she entered and walked to the nurses station where she asked if they could page Dr Carina DeLuca as well as Dr Bailey. Both women came down to the station fairly quickly and brought Maya up to a conference room to talk to her about the little girl before they brought the two together.
Miranda looked at Bishop, she could see the anxiety rolling of the 33 year old woman, she could tell that what was going on was getting to her. "Bishop, Carina had informed me that you have a niece and that she believes that a girl that was admitted last night may be her. We wanted you to see her to get your opinion and then we'll go from there. How much do you know about her?"
"Carina only told me the basics," Maya replied to Bailey, "She told me that she was brought in last night, that she was scared and hasn't spoken to anyone else other than Carina, and that she has the same name as my niece. They both have the name Kassidy."
"She was admitted last night after a 911 call was made after someone saw her running, she then collapsed and was then kicked by a man that had been yelling at her. The man then left her and wasn't there when the police and aid car arrived." Miranda began to explain the blonde, whose eyes were cast down fiddling with her girlfriends fingers, "After she arrived we took her into one of the trauma bays, she was unconscious when she arrived and began to regain consciousness shortly after we got her in. She was scared and wasn't talking and was a Jane Doe up until an hour ago. I asked Carina to be on her care team as we have struggled with males around her at the moment. Are you ready to go see her, Maya?"
The blonde fire captain nodded and began the walk up to the paediatrics floor alongside the two Doctors. The blonde was still quiet which seemed odd to both Carina and Bailey, but they let it slide for now.
They arrived at the room that the young girl was in, the curtains of the room were open so they could all see into the room. All three women looked at the small girl lying in the hospital bed. Maya looked at the girl, she looked so much like Mason.
"She looks so much like him..." Maya muttered, tears welling up in her eyes. The girl was so small, and Maya could practically see the fear. The fear that she knew all too well as a child. " Can we go in?"
The Italian nodded and started to guide the older blonde into the room, knocking before they entered the room hand in hand. As they walked in, Maya noticed the girl began to shrink into herself, a behaviour Maya used to do whenever her father would yell. Carina was the first one to break the silence, "It is good to see you again Bambina. I have brought someone to come see you,"
The small girl glanced up, her crystal like eyes looked back into a matching set of blue eyes. Maya's eyes finally let the tears that were in her eyes fall. Carina spoke again "Kassidy, this is my girlfriend Maya. She wanted to come and see you and talk to you, is that okay?"
The little girl continued to look at the older blonde, to the young teen she looked like a mix between her grandfather and her Nana. Kassidy began to uncurl herself from the small ball that she had tucked herself into, she spoke again for the first time since she had spoken to Carina earlier that morning, "You ran in the Olympics," her voice was by no means loud but it was beautiful to Maya. Maya nodded with a small grimace on her face, the thought of winning the Olympics was now tainted with the reality of abuse that she had endured at the hands of her father.
"Yeah I did, how did you know that?" Maya asked
"My Grandad told me. He told me he trained you," Kassidy responded, her voice still quiet. But there was that bit of information Maya had been so desperate to find out. This little girl was her niece, this was her brother's daughter, this was her Kassidy.
