When Carina woke up the following morning, after learning about Maya's niece, her heart still hurt for the girl as well as Maya and her girlfriend's younger brother. She was aware of the abuse that Maya had gone through as a child, as Maya was only just starting to come to terms with it herself; part of Carina wondered what Kassidy was like. Carina hoped that she wouldn't face the same abuse that Maya had, but she had to be realistic and realise that it was almost certain that the young girl would have been abused by her grandfather.
The Italian noticed that Maya was no longer by her side in bed. So she got up to look for her. Carina found her in the living room, on her phone talking to someone.
"Yes, her name is Kassidy Bishop... I'm her aunt, and she is currently living with her grandfather, Lane Bishop... I would like you to do a check on her and the home that she is in as I suspect that she is in an unsafe home..." Maya spoke quickly and somewhat calmly given the circumstances. Carina watched as she paced across the room completely obvious to anything apart from the task at hand: getting CPS to go and do a wellness check on her 13 year old niece.
The conversation continued for another 20 minutes as Maya gave them the information as to why she had suspected that Kassie was being abused as well as other information. The call ended, which was when Maya noticed Carina sitting at the table watching her, the brunette gave her girlfriend a look and Maya knew instantly what she was asking. "They said they will do a wellness check on her later this afternoon, but they told me that if it is the case that they deem she needs to be removed she will either be placed with me or my mom."
Carina felt relief knowing that her wife had got the ball rolling, and that hopefully the little girl would soon be taken out of the abusive home and be put into one that would be safe. Carina walked over to the blonde and placed a kiss on her lips, after pulling away Carina held her girlfriend's face before she spoke " The bambina will be okay, everything will be done to make sure she is safe.
We will do everything to make sure she is safe. But we now have to let them do their jobs. And we have to get ready for work, okay?"
The blond nodded and walked with Carina to the bedroom, they both started to get ready. Carina fortunately still had some clothes at Maya's apartment so they got ready and left for their respective shifts. Carina made the decision to drop Maya off at work, and then pick her up the following day as they were both on 24 hour shifts.
Upon arriving at the hospital Carina was met with the face of none other than Miranda Bailey, who as soon as she spotted her walked over to the oldest DeLuca sibling. "Dr DeLuca, could I ask you to do something for me today?" The shorter woman asked as the brunette quickly put her shoes on before she made her rounds for the morning.
"Si, what do you need me to do?" The Italian replied
"We had a young girl come in yesterday afternoon, we are suspecting that she may have been abused by the man who looks after her but the issue is that she isn't speaking currently, and seems a bit fearful around men we were only just able get her to let Doctor Lincoln put a cast on her arm. She is currently classed a Jane Doe. I know it isn't your specialty but would you just be able to be on her care team for the time being, just until we are able to get her more comfortable around Doctor Hayes,"
Carina's heart hurt for the child that she didn't even know or had met yet, but her gut was telling her she needed to do it, so she told Bailey yes and proceeded to go on her rounds for the day. She checked on all of the labouring mothers before heading up to the paediatrics floor. The Italian knocked on the door before entering, not wanting to startle they child in the room.
She walked over and sat on the end of the bed, Carina for the first time was able to take in what the young girl looked like. She had shoulder length blonde hair as well as bright blue eyes that looked eerily similar to those of her girlfriends. To be honest the young girl looked very similar to her girlfriend, however she pushed that aside and began to speak to the young girl.
"Hello Bambina, I am Doctor DeLuca and I am going to be looking after you while you are here."
The young girl stared at Carina, just trying to take in the new person. Dr DeLuca to the young girl was calm, her voice was soft and gentle which was very different to her grandfathers. It was also different to Doctor Bailey and Doctor Shepherds, but it was different in a good way. Carina had this light and warmth around her, it made Kassie feel safe.
"I was told by someone that you were brought in last night, could you tell me what happened?" Carina asked, she was aware that it wasn't likely to get a response from the child, however it was worth a shot and she also knew what had happened after reading what had been written the night before when the child was brought in. She just wanted to see if there was a way to get her to talk, and the Italian doctor had an arsenal of ways that she could use to try and make her feel comfortable enough to talk.
The blue eyed girl stared at Carina for a solid 5 minutes before she looked away. Carina stood up to take the girl's vitals when she heard it. It was quiet and if she wasn't paying attention she would have completely missed it.
"I fell." It was short but it gave Carina hope that she would be able to get her to talk a bit more.
"Oh dear, how did you fall then?" Carina kept herself busy as she was aware that it might help the girl talk if all of the attention was take off of her.
"I was running,"
"Do you run a lot?" Carina asked, she was genuinely curious at this point, from what she had been told someone was yelling at her to run, which reminded Carina of Maya and their conversation from the night before. The girl nodded, and then looked down. From the hallway there was a loud crash, which caused both Carina and the girl to jump. However Carina recovered quickly from the scare, the little girl wasn't as fortunate. The girl's small hands went flying up to her ears and she made herself as small as she possibly could in the hospital bed. It broke Carina's heart to see the child scared and in a state of panic just from the loud noise.
Carina walked back over to the bed and kneeled down in front of the bed, she looked at the little girl for a second before speaking, "it is okay bambina, it is okay. Some one dropped something and it just made a loud noise,"
The young girl started to cry, the cries were ones of fear and anxiety. The cries broke the Italian Doctor's heart. The cries started to become panic ramblings of the same sentence over and over again: "please don't let him take me!" Carina noticed that the girls right hand had begun pulling on her hair as a way of trying to comfort herself, was the doctor's best guess.
"Ah, ah, ah, don't do that bambina. You are going to hurt yourself. No one is going to take you anywhere. You are staying here. You are staying in the hospital at the moment and you are safe." The Italian gently untangled the girl hair from her fingers and brought both hands down to her sides, Carina saw how worked up the the child was and so she began to start humming the song that her Mamma would sing to her and her little brother before bed as kids.
It took a few minutes but she was able to calm the little girl down. And she made the decision to ask a question everyone had been asking since the little girl arrived at the hospital, "Could you tell me your name, tesoro?"
The girl looked up, the doctor didn't seem mad at her. She didn't seem mad that she had cried, she was calm and comforted her. It reminded her of her Nana. She hadn't seen her Nana in a few weeks since she left and stopped living with her grandfather. She finally spoke again which shocked Carina as she wasn't expecting to get a response from her again.
"Kassidy." It was at that moment that Carina felt her stomach drop. This very well might be Maya's Kassidy.
