"Mommy! Mamma!" Kassidy cried as Maya and Carina walked out the door, shocking both Vic and Travis. The girl cried out again and again, obviously panicking that Maya and Carina had left the apartment without her. Vic and Travis were shocked to hear Kassidy call Maya and Carina 'Mommy' and 'Mamma', however at the same time it didn't really come as much of a surprise because that is essentially what they had become to the young girl over the past month and a bit.
"Shhhhh, Kassie. They will be home soon," Vic spoke softly, holding the small girl tightly. She continued to cry for Maya and Carina. The small girl's body shook from the anxiety that was running through it. "Kassidy, can you take a big breath for me? That's it, good girl"
Vic and Travis after 30 minutes managed to calm the small girl down enough so she wasn't in the mists of another panic attack, but it was clear that she was still incredibly anxious. Vic and Travis would make sure that she was okay, they would be there while Maya and Carina were out dealing with what they needed to at the station.
The trio sat in silence for another 10 minutes before anyone said anything. Kassie was shockingly the first one to speak, still tightly held in Vic's arms, her head now laying on her chest listening to the rhythmic beating of the women's heart beat while her hand played with Travis's hand that he had given her as another way of trying to ground her when she was panicking.
"What is it like being a firefighter?" Kassie's voice was quiet, but just loud enough for them to hear her.
"It is scary sometimes, but it is also exciting," Vic started, "It can be really hard sometimes, but our job is really important,"
"Carina gets scared when Maya's at work," Kassidy said, surprising both Vic and Travis once again. From their knowledge Maya had taken time off almost immediately after Kassidy had shown up, so they were slightly confused as to how she knew that, but they knew that what she was saying was true. Carina was always worried about Maya when she was at work and that was for good reason, their job could be dangerous. Vic and Travis also picked up on how Kassidy had stopped calling Maya and Carina 'Mommy' and 'Mamma' all of a sudden.
"How do you know that Kassie?" Travis questioned, wanting to know how she had worked that out.
"When Maya left the hospital to go to the fire station when I was still there, Carina got really anxious. She tried to look like everything was okay but she was scared." Kassidy explained, both Travis and Vic knew what day they were talking about. That was the day Lane had shown up demanding to know where Kassidy was, it was the day any of them had seen Maya completely crumble with fear.
"It can be really scary for Carina when Maya is at work, she just wants Maya to be safe. That's why she worries, sweet girl," Travis begins to explain to the small girl, but also tries to be careful about what he says as he doesn't want to make her worry. "But your Maya, she is so careful when she is at work, and I can guarantee you that now that you are with her she is going to be even more careful then she already is because she not only has Carina to come home to but now she has you too."
"We also always make sure that everyone on our team is safe, we aren't going to lose any more of our family," Vic promised, looking at the small girl, knowing that everyone at 19 would try and make sure that they would all be able to come home to their families.Vic and Travis began to tell Kassidy stories about different things that had happened at the station, they told her about different calls and other jobs that they had to do while they were working. During the entire time Vic and Travis were telling different stories Kassidy listened intently. She loved learning more about the people Maya worked with but she also loved hearing stories about her mom.
Kassidy had found herself moving from Vic's lap and squished herself in the middle of the two firefighters, her body feeling completely exhausted. She had spent so much time throughout the day in a state of constant anxiety, and if she was being honest she was still really anxious, but she was pushing through trying to stay calm until Maya and Carina got home, where then she could let down her wall again. Where she could feel completely safe in either of the two women's arms.
It was when Travis got up and walked into the kitchen after he had looked at his phone, Kassidy felt another surge of anxiety run through her body. She knew it was about the time that she would usually eat however, Maya and Carina weren't there. They weren't there to hold her and calm the voices in her head yelling at her as she tried to battle the demons that she was fighting, so when the man came back through with a sandwich as well as some fresh fruit she froze.
She couldn't bring herself to run and hide like she had so many times before, so she sat there, in the hopes that she could will herself to eat something in order to make Vic and Travis happy but she also knew that it would make Maya and Carina happy. But once again she felt too overwhelmed to do it.
"Can you try to eat a little bit, Kassie. I know it is hard but it going to be even harder if you miss this one now," Vic tried to reason with the girl, who was just staring at the plate of food that Travis had in his hand, the anxiety clear to both adults.
It took a moment but Kassidy eventually managed to eat the sandwich and half of the fruit, because she knew that Vic was right. It was going to be more difficult the longer she waited. Both Vic and Travis praised the young girl. Kassidy kept moving around her stomach feeling unsettled, but she was unsure if it was because she had just eaten or if it was the fact that she was anxious. But if she was being honest, it was most likely a combination of the two.
Kassie felt tears rolling down her face as Vic picked her up and began to rock her side to side, before she started to sing softly to the young girl.
"Somewhere over the rainbow/ Way up high/ There's a land that I heard of/ Once in a lullaby/ Somewhere over the rainbow/ Skies are blue/ And the dreams that you dare to dream/ Really do come true" Vic sang softly, her body still swaying side to side. Vic knew that Maya and Carina were going to be home soon, so she knew that even if she wasn't completely calm then she would be once they got home.
She continued to sing and eventually the girl's eyes closed and she fell asleep. Vic moved back to the couch and was next to Travis, Kassidy curled up on the younger firefighters chest. And within 10 Minutes Maya and Carina walked back through the front door.
