Chapter Six
Demons PastIt was about 9:00AM. Sojo was still sound asleep in Korra's room. That was until he heard something coming from outside that woke him up. Sojo slowly sat up in the bed and rubbed his head.
"Why do I feel all woozy?" He asked himself before looking around and realizing where he was.
"The others!" Sojo shouted before lunging out of the bed and out to the hall where he almost ran into Pema.
"Woah! Easy there, Sojo. Everything's okay." Pema reassured.
"W-what happened? Is everyone alright? Where's Korra?" He asked in a panic.
"Relax. Everyone is okay. They went back home earlier this morning. Korra is outside training. You... don't remember what happened last night?" Pema asked him. Closing his eyes and focusing, Sojo tried to recall the previous nights events.
"I only remember talking to Korra before being attacked by some sort of assassins or something. Everything else is a blur." Sojo explained.
"That's all? Tenzin said that you saved everyone after unleashing incredible power... again. You pulled them from the water then created a massive vortex of fire that surrounded the entire temple, pushing Amons Lieutenant and his men off of the temple." Pema explained.
"I-I lost control again. Did... did I kill anyone?" You asked Pema. Her expression dropped slightly before she sighed.
"A few of the assassins were charred pretty bad. They didn't make it." Pema replied.
"But that's nothing to blame yourself for. They attacked you, intended on killing the others. You were only defending your friends." Pema said before his expression changed.
"No. Those deaths are on me. But I don't blame myself. In fact." Sojo said before looking up to Pema with a blank expression.
"I would've killed them anyway, had I not lost control. Anyone who comes after me or my friends." Sojo added as he walked past Pema.
"Will pay the ultimate price." Sojo finished before leaving Pema to herself, a slight worried expression on her face as she watched him leave.Meanwhile, Korra was outside practicing her bending techniques. Trying to hone her skills better after the events of the night prior.
"I have to get stronger. For my friends, myself, and most importantly, for Sojo. I can't keep leaving everything up to him." Korra thought as she performed a high level waterbending move, creating a massive orb of water before throwing her hands down, creating dozens of ice spikes and impailing a practice dummy with them. She breathed heavily as she started trying to focus. Focusing on trying to muster any airbending whatsoever. She performed some movements before attempting to bend air, to no avail. She sighed in disappointment before slumping down to her knees.
"What is wrong with me?" She thought.
"Still can't band any air, huh?" Korra heard a ways away. She looked over to see Sojo standing there, leaning against a stone with a smile.
"Movements are very fluid, but something's still holding you back." Sojo added. Korra beamed with glee as she jolted up and ran over to him, flinging her arms tightly around him.
"You're okay." She exclaimed as she rested her head into his chest. Sojo placed a comforting hand on her head as she looked up into his eyes. Naga then ran over and licked Sojo in the face just before Nari flew down and rubbed Sojo's head.
"Yup. All good here you three. How about you?" Sojo asked Korra. She just looked away and sighed.
"I don't know." She replied. Sojo then grabbed her hand and sat down with her on a nearby bench.
"Talk to me." Sojo said.
"It's just... almost every time I've been in a bind, I haven't been able to come out of it on my own. Instead, I've left that responsibility to you. You've always saved me in dire situations. I'm the avatar, I can't do that." Korra explained. Sojo just sighed and looked up to the morning sky.
"I get what you're saying. But you really don't need to worry out. Besides, it's not just you I've saved ever since I came to the city. I've saved others as well. I help out anyone I deem in need of help. That goes for the avatar as well, Korra." Sojo explained with a smile.
"And I think you're an amazing person for doing so. But as the avatar I need to have a better grip on things. I have to be able to rise to the occasion, no matter the situation. I have to get stronger. I have to be better." Korra explained.
"Well, Korra... you're right. But you're also wrong." Sojo explained.
"Huh?" Korra questioned with a confused expression.
"I mean I don't think you need to be any stronger than you already are. Sure, power and skill count for a lot. But so does your mentality and your experience." Sojo replied.
"What do you mean?" Korra asked.
"I mean, in the most respectful way possible, you need to work on your equilibrium. Learn to stay calm and composed, even in the most difficult situations. And you still need to work on your spirituality. Learn to harness your true nature as the Avatar, being the bridge between worlds. That, is what's hindering you and preventing you from truly learning airbending." Sojo explained. Korra took a moment to process his words before sighing and nodding.
"You're right. I'm sorry, Sojo. I know I've been somewhat difficult in our training with that side of things. Not just to you, but to master Tenzin as well. Whether I like it or not, I am the avatar. I need to learn the most fundamental principles of being the avatar. No matter how difficult they may be." Korra explained before dawning a more serious expression.
"So starting today, I'll begin my true training. I will master my equilibrium and learn how to be spiritual. I will learn to be a true avatar." Korra said with confidence. Sojo smiled and placed his hand on top of hers.
"I know you will. And once you do, there's not a doubt in my mind you'll become one of the best Avatars to date." Sojo said. Korra beamed with happiness from Sojo's words as she flung her arms around him in a warm embrace.
"Thank you, Sojo. You really have been a blessing in my life, since the day we met." Korra said.
"I could say the same about you." Sojo replied. Korra blushed in response before gazing into Sojo's bright violet eyes. Sojo returned the favor, looking deeply into her blue orbs as the distance between the two started gradually closing.
