After a relaxing shower, I got in bed smiling about the new friend I made. The thought of Marc came back to me. I decided I was gonna call my mom first thing in the morning, tomorrow was friday. I was gonna go visit him and sort my shit out, then spend time with my parents. I already missed them despite the fact I moved here a week ago. I got a text from Zacky..
" Hey Ali, hope you had fun tonight , want to grab some lunch after class? I'm buying. Zacky V. Xxx"
"You were not the worst company I've had" I typed, repeating his words. " Stop teasing me with hints, Mister V., I won't Google you. But I will go to lunch with you."
"Hehe, good night, California girl..."
The next morning, I called my mom as planned to tell her I was visiting tonight for the weekend. She told me they spent the night at the hospital, my father had what seemed to be pneumonia. He would be back there next week to run some more tests, routine exams, my mom reassured me.
I went to class energized, unlike the beginning of the week. I was sitting next to Zacky, we exchanged smiles throughout that period. The only thing I'd learned yet this semester was how beautiful this guy's eyes were. Damn, I had to focus on something useful to get my fucking degree. That is why I was here after all. The class ended soon enough and we went out for lunch.
" So... where are you staying? Since you are only here for this semester? " I was trying to make conversation.
"I rent a room at that hotel." He showed me a picture of his room.
"Wow, it is nice."
" It is. I'm used to hotels, you know, with my job, but I much prefer our home. I currently live with my bandmates who happen to be my best friends."
"Living the dream..."
" I am actually, I am so grateful I get to do the thing I love most. Dreams do come true. Well, except that one when I become a successful baseball player." We laughed, then he continued, seriously. "So never give up on that tattoo artist career. Even people in your life will try to discourage you. I've been there. And let me tell you, you got talent, Cali girl. "
I smiled at him.
"So anyway..." He digressed. " What are you up to this weekend ? "
"Visiting my parents. And breaking up."
"Ohh..."
And then, there was silence.
" I am so sorry, I killed the mood, again."
"No worries. How are you?" He looked concerned.
"I am fine with it. He won't be, he wants me to stay with him. But he is in jail, sold drugs, lied to me about it for years until he couldn't. I tried to stay but I honestly don't know why I stayed that long. I am ready to let go."
"You deserved better."
" I know that now..." I sighed. "Anyway, what are your plans?"
" Nothing planned. I don't know yet. " He shrugged. " Maybe I'll go home tomorrow."
We were interrupted by my phone ringing.
"Hi, yes, yes this is she... Now ? Yes, of course. I'll be there in 20 minutes" I hung up and stood up. " I am so sorry, I have to go, I have a job interview."
"This is good." He said. "You got this. " He said goodbye, I thanked him and he hugged me quickly. I went out the door.
