LADY KIM SAT INSIDE HER QUARTERS, LAZILY FANNING HERSELF WHILE HER EYES SKIMMED OVER THE PAGES OF HER BOOK. It was a story of the Queen Dowager Lin Jie, the Mad Queen, the great grandmother of Jieun and Jungwon. The Queen Dowager had fallen into madness. In the last of her days, she was said to have been screaming and crying, dreaming of holding her children. Together with her husband and late king, the two had seven children, all of whom were killed, six sons and one daughter. She refused company by no one but her own sister, whose arms she would often weep in.

'My children, my sons. . . oh and my sweet daughter, I wish to see them,' The Queen Dowager had told her sister in her final hours. 'I will read to her, my daughter, just as I always had. I will brush her hair, I will spoil her and love her. . . just as I always had. And I will watch as my love teaches our sons to hunt, as he forms them into the fine men they are.' The last few hours had been of the Queen Dowager slipping in and out of her dreams until she finally opened the windows to the sky and threw herself from her tower.

There was a knock on her door.

Upon entering the room, Jieun was greeted by Lady Kim. 'Jieun! What a pleasant surprise,' Lady Kim exclaimed, closing her book in an instant. 'Please, have a seat.'

'Sweet sister,' Jieun began, trying to get Lady Kim to warm up around her. 'How have you been, are you nervous for the upcoming wedding?'

The wedding between her brother and Lady Kim was to take place in a few months.

'Yes, of course I am nervous, sister. What would you do if your life was about to change forever?' Lady Kim heaved in a heavy sigh. 'I find myself very restless these days.'

'Oh, darling,' Jieun took hold of Lady Kim's hand and sat down on the armchair across. 'You need not worry. My brother is a kind man. Yes, he is a turmoil. But he will treat you well. He may not love you the way a husband is supposed to love his wife, but he will be kind to you.'

Lady Kim hummed in response. 'If he treats me well, maybe, with the passage of time, I can grow to love him. It's not easy to love in this world of wolves, is it, sister?'

Shaking her head, Jieun let go of Lady Kim's hand. 'For a woman, no. It is as if the world was not built for us.'

'Sometimes I wish I was born a man. They can do whatever they want without any repercussions, while we women are not allowed to live the life we want. It doesn't seem fair, does it?'
