THE ROOM WAS PERMEATED WITH A DISTINCT AND SOMBER SCENT, a combination of various elements that created a unique atmosphere. The aroma of beeswax candles hung in the air, their flickering flames casting a warm glow upon the chamber. The scent of melted wax mingled with a hint of aged wood from the furniture, giving the room an aura of timeless grace. King Jaeho laid in his bed, weakened by his illness, but his eyes still held a flicker of strength. Surrounding him were the council members ━ Lord Lee, Lord Park, and Lord Kim, each with their own thoughts weighing heavily on their minds.
Jieun stood near her father's bedside, her heart heavy with anticipation and a tinge of anxiety. She knew that the time had come for her father to make a crucial decision ━ one that would shape the future of the kingdom and, more importantly, her own destiny.
The king's voice, though weakened, held a commanding presence as he spoke. 'My dear lords, I have gathered you here today to discuss a matter of utmost importance. As you are well aware, my health deteriorates with each passing day, and the time has come for me to name my successor.'
The room fell into a hushed silence, all eyes fixed on King Jaeho. Jieun's heart pounded in her chest, her breath caught in her throat. She was acutely aware of the weight of her father's words and the magnitude of the decision he was about to make.
'I have given this matter careful consideration, and after much deliberation, I have come to a decision,' the king continued, his gaze fixed on Jieun. 'My daughter, Princess Jieun, shall be my successor, to carry forth the legacy of our kingdom.'
A mix of surprise and uncertainty rippled through the council members. Lord Lee's brows furrowed, his gaze shifting between the king and Jieun. Lord Park wore a solemn expression, while Lord Kim's features betrayed a hint of disbelief.
'Your Grace, may I speak?' Lord Lee finally broke the silence, his voice filled with a blend of respect and concern.
Her eyes fluttered to his, breath held in anticipation. Of course, the decision to make her heir was already made. This was just a formal act of letting the lords know and to get their support. Without the support from the lords, the realm would fall apart.
