KING JAEHO PACED FRANTICALLY AS HIS WIFE WENT THROUGH THE LABOUR PROCESS. His face was pale, and his eyes darted back and forth across the chamber ━ a clear sign of high anxiety on behalf of the King of the realm. Finally, he could take no more. 'Is there anything I may do?' He pleaded with the midwife. 'I know it is not ideal, but can nothing be done to make my wife comfortable?' He continued. Jaeho was desperate to help his wife in any way he could, even if it was just a little reassurance.
King Jaeho thought to himself and prayed as he glanced around for anything ━ a blanket to keep his wife warm, a cup of water or wine to ease her throat, anything to give his wife a moment of comfort in her time of need. Jaeho was desperate to do something.
He heard her scream in pain inside the chambers, causing him to pace quicker. He almost feared he would set the carpet on fire with his pacing.
'Perhaps you should sit down, Your Grace,' the commander of the guards with red cloaks ━ the Red Cloaks ━ said, Ser Park.
'Do not tell me what to do, Good Ser, in dire times like these,' King Jaeho told him. He could not just sit there and do nothing, as his wife was giving birth on the other side of the door to him.
Suddenly, the door to the chambers opened and midwives ushered him into the room, telling him to comfort his wife as she would need to push.
Jaeho walked into the room and took his wife's hand. 'Do not fret, my love. The Three are watching over you. Let us keep up prayers to them. We do not know how long we will need to remain in this room, but regardless of how much time we have ━ we will survive this, my love. We have come this far.' He looked upon his wife with a determined look. 'You have my word.'
'I can't, Jaeho,' Mei Li breathed out, tears running down her cheeks.
Jaeho sighed gently and squeezed her hand. 'My love, you have done such a magnificent job so far. You can do this. This is just a small part of the battle. You have fought through the hard part, you can do this for your children. Do not feel discouraged.'
Mei Li squeezed his hand tightly as another wave of pain hit her. 'I'm sorry,' she apologised, breath out of her lungs.
His hand tightened in response. 'Do not forget to breathe. Focus on that. Take some deep breaths and relax. I am here with you. We will get through this. Just a few more minutes, then it will all be over.' And Jaeho prayed he was right, for the sake of his wife and their unborn children.
The King was indeed right, for moments later the cry of a baby was heard.
Jaeho took a few deep breaths in relief as the midwife gave him the happy news that the first of their two children had been born, a girl.
Moments later, the second one was born, a boy.
Yang Jungwon and Yang Jieun were born.
