You've been married to the dark mage for three years.

Three whole years.

Three amazing, lovely years.

And your husband STILL hasn't removed his gloves around you.

You have asked him why, of course you have. He skirts around the topic, never giving you a clear answer. So you've stopped asking. He may just not be comfortable doing so yet.

...

Yeah that didn't last very long.

"My love?" You asked while Hubert was engrossed in some paperwork he was doing on the empire's behalf.

No response.

"My mage of darkness?" You got up to move over to his desk.

No. Response.

"The absolute love of my life? The coffee to my sugar? The magic in the world? The most amazing, most wonderful-"

"Yes dear?" He finally responded with a quirked brow, clearly amused by your antics.

"So..." You started and his look of amusement only grew. "About your gloves..."

"My hands are covered in blood," he responded so bluntly you almost were shocked. Almost.

"Blood?" You quietly asked, curious to know his response.

"Blood, yes. The blood of the people I've killed in our path for justice," Hubert brought his gloved hands up in front of his face. His hands were shaking yet if you weren't looking you wouldn't have caught that detail.

"Is that so?" You kept your quiet tone, knowing he was speaking some truth. Some but not full.

"Yes, quite..." Hubert trailed off. He was lost in thought or maybe memories is a more accurate term. You knew that when he gets like this, the best thing to do is wait. So you waited.

Five minutes later, he was back.

"Hubert," you started and he jumped a bit. "All of our hands are bloodied in some way. We all fought in this war. We all have killed. Whether that be for justice or for self defense. The casualties were an unfortunate side effect of battle. All wars have casualties." You didn't move to comfort him. You knew he wouldn't want it. Your words would do their work in his mind and he would understand. He always does.

"Yes. Yes, you're quite right," Hubert spoke, barely above a whisper. "Now I must finish my work. I'll be in bed as you're falling asleep." You gave your husband a soft look and he smiled a fraction of a smile back at you.

"Goodnight my love," you said and he nodded at you.

The next day was... Odd.

Not in a bad way, not at all.

Just, very very different.

First of all, breakfast had been made for you and was at your bedside table.
