There was something tender in the way Morpheus carried you. Exhaustion had taken your body as the intense cold consumed you. You were relieved when Morpheus hoisted you effortlessly in his arms as you disappeared into a swirl of sand.
He was cradling you to his chest, your face burrowing against the side of his. It wasn't till now that you registered how pleasant he smelt; more than that, it was intoxicating. There were no words to describe it other than an earthy spice, woodsy and warm, but something sweeter underneath. Blueberries? Blackberries? Gooseberries? You nudged your nose closer to the base of his throat and groaned in bliss, surrendering to the untainted fragrance.
The walk was long, moving across the land from where you appeared. You were too tired to want to take it in, but you felt it against your skin as he carried you. The feel of the long grass against your bare arms, the sound of animals in the distance and the vibration of people moving around you, a hive of activity. There was a brief moment when you thought about calling out, crying for help, running and seeking safety in the crowds. But how far would you get, and how powerful was he? If Death herself couldn't intervene, why would anyone else? And the biggest question, did you want to? That answer sunk in your stomach.
You only peered from the safety of his neck once as the rush of water grew louder. He walked you across a great bridge, dark stone against the glistening rich blue of the water. You wished you could have gazed at it longer, but something else caught your attention. It was the way people reacted to him. Some people bowed to him; others sank to their knees, eyes glancing over you before training on the floor. Then there was the whisper, so faint you could barely hear them, but they were there. Another thought wiggled its way to the top of your mind. If Morpheus could appear and reappear at will, at least with the aid of his sand, why had he not transported you to where you were going?
Another violent shiver passed through you. It was so cold. You were always cold, but this was more than that. You felt Morpheus draw you closer, tucking you further inside his jacket and pressing you tightly against his body. In that warmth, you realised you were trembling.
'Only a little further, my dream.' The low voice rumbled, pressing a kiss to the crown of your head.
You were carried up the great stone steps, through the impossible white halls and into a big black archway. It was not the same room as earlier; this was far grander. Sweeping black sheer curtains danced across the floor, the giant bed covered in midnight blue silk. Above the ceiling, crusted with jewels, glistening like the night sky, blessing the room with a soft light. Carefully you were deposited at the end of the extravagant bed.
Steely gaze fell back on you, and for a moment, he stared at you, penetrating you with that gaze. His features were pensive and pained, but he said nothing as he moved across the room and, with a flourish, wrapped a plush fur around your shoulders. Despite the thickness and the warmth, you were still cold.
'Why did you show me those things?' You scowled, burrowing deeper into the thickness of the blanket.
Silhouetted against the fire, Morpheus remained unmoving, staring down at you. He spoke clearly with purpose, his voice penetrating every inch of the room. 'To show you the truth, to make you understand what was and is.'
'You couldn't have just explained it.'
'Would you have listened?' That was true. Would you have listened or even believed there was such a thing?'What did my sister speak about?' Morpheus's voice had a bite to it, breaking you from your thoughts, and you didn't fail to notice how he edged forward.
You spoke carefully, eyes never leaving his 'That she didn't think we were soulmates.'
His reaction was unexpected. He took a full furious step forward. At full height, he was an imposing figure, incredibly dark hair sticking out at all angles, cheekbones sharp enough to cut diamond and soft, gentle lips that now snarled over his teeth.
