Today felt like it was stretched out by the seconds, like a thick piece of gum stuck at the bottom of a shoe that made your ill fitting slippers slip off. Simultaneously, it also felt like the next thing you knew, the sun had set and the lunch you meant to eat was now the dinner you meant to eat.
But then again, you suppose being a parent felt like that, especially since you had two at your hip now.
Dream, with his shadowy form nearing you, his glistening, dark cloak, dragging itself behind him, reaches out to your forehead before taking his child that was nuzzled by your breast. You had fallen asleep whilst feeding your son, and the babe had promptly done the same after he was done suckling.
Dream scoops up the child with his ivory hands, clutching him with so much care that it appeared rigid and devoid of all affection. He looks to you, his lover, who gifted him not one, but two beautiful children. He adjusts the clothes on your form, as well as the blanket on you, then simply looks for another moment.
Dream then turns and moves toward his son's bassinet. But he stops before he even takes two steps, for the cloak behind him had a weight dragging him back.
The king of dreams curiously peers over his shoulder then spots a tiny creature sitting at the ends of his garment.
The said creature, distracted by the velvety feel of the fabric, feels his stare then looks up. Her eyes are wide and bright. To Dream, they glistened brighter than his ever could, than the stars ever could. She blinks at her father, and her father blinks at her. He tilts his head, "hold on, my love."
So, the tiny child leans into Dream's cloak, gripping her soft hands into the black cloth.
Dream walks across the room, the child on the makeshift ride giggles in excitement. In truth, the crib was merely a few steps away from him, but he decides to walk around the room, circling over furniture, going in and out of rooms he had no business in, before finally commencing the travel.
Before putting down his son, he observes his daughter and finds a smile come upon his face at the sight of her giddy form. She had let go of Dream's cloak in lieu of clutching her bare feet and rolling back in laughter.
Dream places the boy in his bed, rubbing the soft skin on his infinitesimal hand with his thumb before attending to the giggling mess on the floor.
Dream picks her up and coos at her form, rocking her in his arms, caressing her plush sides gently. She laughs harder, and it makes the Endless panic.
He places a finger to his lips and shushes, "your mother is asleep."
She settles down slightly.
Dream watches as she sighs and sequentially nuzzles against his form.
At this point, the girl embraces her father and finds contentment in his arms. He embraces her back and kisses her forehead.
She presses her cheek against his chest and looks down from his arms. She spots her sleeping brother and rubs her cheek against his shirt.
"Papa."
"Yes, my heart?"
She looks to her brother lying in his crib, "I hope you don't forget about me all the time."
Dream is alarmed. He pulls away from her to look at his daughter's face. His brows furrow, "I have never and will never forget about you, my dear."
She looks up at him with thoughtful look, "but you said we could play after--fter he stopped crying, but we didn't."
He stills, immediately remembering the moment in which he promised the very thing to his daughter.
He tenses. He deflates. He is ashamed, "you are right... I did forget about that."
She blinks slowly, the way tired children do.
"Then we shall play this instant, my darling, if you would like it," Dream says.
Immediately, the girl comes to life, and breaks into a wide smile.
So after barely an hour of play, Dream and his baby play with all the toys they could up until the girl was too tired to do anything but sleep.
Dream, much like what he did for his son, cradles his daughter with about as much rigid care, and carries her to her bed.
This time though, once she is upon her bed, the child wakes up and grabs at her father.
"Papa-" she gasps, eyes wide, startled awake.
Dream looks down on her, pushing her hair back, "I am here, my love."
She pulls at his clothes, "will you go away?"
"Never," he retorts quickly. He sighs. His heart aches.
"But what about baby?" she whispers.
"I will not leave him either."
She frowns, curling into her bed.
Dream kneels on the floor and pulls the child into his arms. The girl embraces him and nuzzles against his cheek, "don't go away."
"Never," he kisses the crown of her head, "I will always be here for you. Forgive me if you feel otherwise, my darling."
She closes her heavy lids and sighs, "promise papa?"
Dream nod, "I promise on my life, my daughter."
