'Look who's awake...'
Sabo opened her eyes and looked around her, there was no one there.
She was laying on the large grass field in front of her house. Fresh snow surrounded her. Sabo shot up from the floor and looked at her house.
How did she get here?
Wait.
She couldn't be here. Her home didn't exist anymore, it had been burned down.
'It must be weird being here, isn't it?' the voice said again. Sabo turned around again.
In front of her stood a large blond man with piercing blue eyes, her eyes.
The Opjer family had been one of the wealthiest and most famous families in Fjerda. They were easily recognizable by their blond, almost platinum-colored hair.
The man in front of her looked older than the last time she'd seen him. His beard was now streaked with grey and his build was skinnier.
She took a step back and her instinct kicked in as she reached for her knife.
It wasn't there.
'Is that how you greet your old man?' her father smiled, there was something sad in his smile.
This is a trick like last time, she thought.
No family of her wanted her, and if they did it was to get her back to Fjerda to be killed by the drüskelle. She wouldn't make that mistake again.
'It's a suitable greeting, considering the circumstances.' she replied in Fjerdan. He took a small step toward her and he held up his hands, showing her that he wasn't carrying any weapons.
'I'm not here to hurt you, Bella.' her father said. 'I'm here to guide you through.'
She took another step back.
'To guide me through what?'
She took another step back and looked behind her. She looked into the window of her house, everything looked exactly the same. As if she never left.
When she saw her reflection, she knew something was wrong. She looked like herself, her hair was platinum-blond and her eyes were piercing blue, but small black lines were covering her face.
She looked at her hands, they too were covered in black lines and they were slowly spreading.
'You're dying, Bella.' the man spoke sadly. 'I'm here to make sure you don't.'
It slowly came back to her, the poison.
'Then why would I see you? You're one of the last persons I want to see.'
'And yet, I'm here.'
He looked so innocent and sad. As if he really didn't want her to die.
It's a trick, she reminded herself, nothing more and nothing less.
'I understand that you don't trust me, but I need you to listen to me.' he said as he took another step toward her. 'You need to wake up, Bel. It's your only chance.'
'I'm here because of the poison.' she wondered out loud. 'I need to fight it.'
Her father smiled at her, and she suddenly felt a hint of pride. She had always wanted to make her father laugh and prided herself in it when she did. 'That's my girl.' he nodded.
