Sabo's life has been a collection of devastating situations.

After she had escaped the Ice Court, she'd thought that that would be the worst experience of her life. She had been wrong.

Ever since Sabo escaped with two other prisoners, they had settled down in Novyi Zem and never looked back again.

Sabo knew them as Lorelai and Shana. Lorelai and Shana knew her real name but called her by her alias, Sabo.

Sabo didn't want to know their real names, they weren't the people they had been when they'd entered the Ice Court.

Their old lives were behind them and they never spoke of it again.

Sabo was sitting on the deck of the ship. The sky was dark as she turned over the small ring from the box Ohval gave her.

Sabo was still holding the box, waiting for Inej to walk to the cabin she shared with Nina. Inej was talking with Tolya and Tamar on the other side of the ship. They were talking about how they operated the ship, how to gain speed or to slow down, and about the adventures they've had on it.

Sabo looked back at the ring. The ring was silver, with a bright blue line running over it. The ring represented the circle of Djel and even though it was dark, it still sparkled.

'You're still up too, huh?' Jesper said as he sat down next to Sabo.

Sabo cursed. 'You're almost as quiet as Inej.'

'Impossible.' Jesper laughed as he placed his hat on the small table in front of them. He looked at the ring. 'Where did you get that from?'

Sabo placed the ring into her pocket. 'The market.'

Jesper rose an eyebrow at her. 'Is that why Kaz was late?'

Sabo frowned. 'I don't know what Kaz was doing on the market.' she replied, not understanding what he was saying.

Jesper restrained a grin. He closed his mouth before he opened it again. 'What did Ohval want from you?'

Sabo avoided his gaze as she looked over to Inej. 'I don't know. She just wanted to drink tea.'

'You're sure it wasn't poisonous?' Jesper quipped.

'Since I'm still breathing, I am.'

'Just tea then?' Jesper asked again.

Sabo frowned as she looked at him. 'I just told you.'

Jesper nodded at her, but it was obvious that he didn't believe her.

'Are you alright?' she asked.

'Yes. It's just-, Wylan told me that he grabbed four butterflies out of the garden instead of five. How did you get past the poison?'

'I don't know what you're talking about.' Sabo said as she placed the ring back into the box, she closed it before Jesper could see what was in it.

'You're saying the merchling is lying?'

'I'm not saying that, maybe he miscounted.'

'I don't think he did.' Jesper said as he observed her. 'Why are you being all secretive all of a sudden?'

Sabo stood up from her chair. 'Every one of us has secrets, Jesper. You're not telling everyone what you saw in your vision now, are you?'

'I saw my mom.' he replied honestly. 'My vision wasn't bad for me, Sabo. It was eye-opening.'
