—Drew Borden
My dad quickly covers his eyes and I jump off of my bed and push him out the door. Closing the door behind me, I look at my dad.
He gives me the evil eye before speaking. "What the hell are you doing Drew?!" he whisper yells. "I don't want to come home from work to see you doing that with... I don't even know who!"
"Dad, I promise I can explain," I say, trying to calm him down.
"You better have a good explanation for that! You are not having a baby this young!"
I roll my eyes. "We weren't going to go all the way."
"You get dressed and tell her to get dressed as well, then meet me downstairs for a talk," he spits, then turns around and walks downstairs.
I take a deep breath before walking back into my room. Ally stands in the middle of my room, dressed. The look of terror and worry on her face is so big that the neighbors might be able to see it.
"D-did h-he see m-me?" she stutters, pulling on the rim of her shirt.
"Yes, but not well enough. We have to go down and talk to him," I say, pulling my pants and shirt on.
"Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God I'm so dead," she whispers, pacing back and fourth. "This is not a g-good way to impress your dad."
I place my hands on her shoulders, stopping her in her place, and I look her dead in her blue eyes. "Ally, everything will be okay. I promise."
She takes a deep breath and moves her arms down to her sides. "Okay, lets go talk to him then."
I give her an encouraging smile before opening to the door for her. She slowly steps out, staring at the floor. I walk over next to her and I take a hold of her hand. We both slowly and carefully walk downstairs. When reaching the bottom, my dad gets up from the couch and walks over to us.
"And who might this be?" he asks pointedly.
"This," I respond, placing a hand on her back, but then regretting it seconds later. "Is Ally. She's my girlfriend."
"Girlfriend? For how long?" he asks, crossing his arms.
"Not that long," I respond cautiously.
He holds a hand out to Ally and says, "Well then what a pleasure to meet you, Ally. Just didn't know that the first time I would meet so much of you."
Ally shakes his hand, turning red in the process. "Dad, really?" I rhetorically ask.
"It's the truth," he says, dropping Ally's hand. "How long have you been home. It's awfully early for you two."
"Ally had some personal problems, Dad. She couldn't go home, so I brought her over here."
"So, you skipped school?" he asks, pushing for details.
"Yes, but for a good reason."
"And that would be?" he asks, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow. There was silence. I can't tell him Ally's secret.
"M-my d-dog d-died," Ally whispers. "He g-got ran over b-by a c-car, and it was m-my f-fault."
"She was miserable, Dad," I say, shoving my hands into my pockets. "I couldn't let her go on like that."
My dad loosens up and drops his arms. He sighs, runs his hands through his hair, and places a hand on my shoulder. "Well, you didn't exactly do the right thing, but I'm glad you have a heart son."
I give him a small smile and he puts his hands in his pockets. "I'm sorry about your dog, Ally."
She gives him a small nod and looks at the ground.
"Would you like to stay for dinner?" he asks.
She looks up at him and hugs herself. "Sure," she says softly.
"Great, I'll start working on it," my dad says, and he turns around to walk away, but stops himself. He turns to us and says, "Keep that door open."
I nod and look at Ally who's biting her bottom lip and playing with the bottom of her shirt. My dad turns away and walks into the kitchen. Ally is upstairs and into my room before I could even turn and take the first step. I hop my way upstairs and into my room.
Ally lay on her back on my bed with a pillow covering her face. I walk over to her and sit next to her which makes her jump and drop the pillow. She sits up and pulls her knees up to her chest.
"That was so embarrassing!" she quietly yells into her knees.
"I'm so sorry, Ally. Time just went by so fast and I forgot that he was coming home early today. I guess that's what happens when you're having fun."
She looks up and pushes me as I laugh. "This is not a laughing matter! Drew, that was horrifying!" she whisper-yells. She gets off my bed and starts pacing again while repeatedly saying, "Oh my God."
"Ally if you keep doing that you're going to leave a line on my floor," I joke and smile.
She grabs a pillow and hits me with it. "How could you let this happen!"
"Like I said, 'Time goes by when you're having fun,'" I say and smile. She hits me again with the pillow and I laugh. She hits me three more times before I pull her down on my bed and tickle her. She screams and starts kicking mid-air.
"Stop!" she manages to say, trying to push my hands away. "No tickling!"
I laugh along with her after I stop tickling her. She pushes me with her feet and I fall off the bed, landing on the ground with a thud. She laughs so hard that she can barley breathe. I can't even feel pain, because all I can think of is: I got her to smile and laugh. Wow, I love this girl.
And I don't regret thinking that.
