"What did he say?" I ask Mr. Borden, worried. He takes a deep sigh after setting his phone down on the counter and gives me worried filled eyes.
"He's not that happy with me. He....he's just tired. You should go visit him. Maybe it'll make him feel better," he says, forcing a weak smile.
"Ok... I'll pick him up flowers on the way," I say, smiling.
"I'll drop you off on my way to work."
"But then you'll be late."
"It's alright. It's worth it," he says, smiling. I return a smile. "Okay lets go."
-
"Are you sure he's going to like these?" I ask, looking at the big bundle of flowers in my hand.
"Yea, trust me he will," he says, smiling and continues to drive.
"How do you know he will?" I ask, looking at him.
"We got snapdragons for my wedding and peonies for my wife's funeral. She always use to say 'There's nothing better than snapdragons and peonies. They're both so beautiful and colorful. Roses and Lily's don't compare to them. They'll always be my number one favorite,'" he says in her voice and smiles. "Drew loves them too. I think it's because he was so close to his mom that he now sees some things through her eyes."
I like that this thought doesn't make him upset, but happy. That makes me happy as well. We both smile and stay silent till we reach the hospital.
"Thank you. I can probably walk home or get a cab or something," I say to him.
"Okay, stay safe," he says, then drives off.
I walk into the hospital and tell the front desk I'm looking for Drew. They tell me which room is his and I start walking down the hall. I look into the different rooms. One room has an old lady sleeping in the bed and another has a child with balloons and flowers surrounding him. I smile and say to myself that everything will be alright. At that moment, I smile and my heart fills with joy.
When I see Drew's room, I stop in front of the door and fix my hair and stand up straight. I take a deep breath and open the door and smiling, only to come face to face with disappointment. In front of me, I see Cindy kiss Drew. My smile drops and my heart hits the floor. Tears fill my eyes and my hands go numb. My arm hangs low, flowers brushing the floor.
This isn't happening. This isn't happening. This is not happening.
I blink making sure this is reality and open my mouth. I expect myself to yell, but no anger fills my body; just sadness and pain. I manage to only get out one word. The name of someone I thought loved me.
"Drew?" I ask, my voice cracking. I need to make sure it's him. Drew and Cindy both turn their heads in unison and stare at me. I stare Drew in the eyes before dropping the flowers and running out of the room. I run down the hallway of the hospital, hearing my name being shout out behind me. I run out of the hospital crying. My vision goes blurry when I reach the street. I still hear my name being shout behind me. I look both ways before crossing the street and running in the direction of Drew's house. I run as fast as my legs can go.
When I see Drew's house I stop as voices fill my head. I drop to my knees and cover my ears and start shaking. I knew I should've just hung myself. I would've died and I would've stayed dead. Why me? Why is this happening to me?
