Picture of Ally!

--Ally Christian

I awaken to the sound of movement. I open my eyes slowly and glance around the familiar room. Jill has just opened the blinds and is now gathering up the food items from last night and puts them on the tray she gave me. I hear her sigh and pick up the tray. She turns to me and is slightly startled when she sees I'm awake. I stay silent and stare her in the eyes.

"You left yo' room last night, Ally," she says sternly to me. So that wasn't a dream...

"I'm sorry I-I had t-to use th-the bathroom," I lie.

"If you were goin' to use the bathroom then why did one of the nurses find ya in another patients room?" Jill asks, setting down the tray and walking over to me; arms crossed and a sparkle of suspicion in her eye.

"I s-saw a n-nurse c-coming d-down the hallway and I p-panicked. I r-ran into the f-first room I saw," I scramble for my words. "I-I don't know w-what happened after that."

"You passed out and got taken back to yo' room by nurses. We'd like ya to stay in yo' bed tonight. We don't want to lock the door, but if we have ta, we will. The pills that I gave you helped with yo' pain, but it also made ya sleepy," she explained. "Now tell me what you were actually doing up."

"W-what?" I ask, confused. How does she know I'm lying?

"I know ya weren't just goin' to the bathroom. Ya went befo' bed and didn't have much to drink. So, what were you actually doing?"

I take a deep breath and bite my lip. I stay silent, not wanting to answer her question. Keeping my eyes on the bed, I bite my lip harder and hold the tears in my eyes. I make my hands fists, but as I do I feel the pain run up my arms. I wince at the pain, but I keep my hands in fists.

"Stop that hun you gonna hurt yo'self," she says softly, placing her hands on the fists. I relax my fists and look at her in the eyes. We stay silent for a bit. She sighs quietly and sits down on my bed and holds my hands. "I'm guessin' that's what you want?"

I nod and try to hold back my tears, but fail in the process for tears run down my cheeks uncontrollably, yet I stay silent, not a single whine leaving my mouth. I take a slow shaky breath and whisper, "H-he was h-here."

"Who was here?" she asks, concerned.

"M-my d-dad," I stutter and burst into more tears, this time sobbing. She hugs me and holds me for minutes on end. I start to shake in the middle of crying, but she stays calm; rubbing my back and talking softly into my ear.

"It'll be alright, Ally," she says softly. "He can't do nothing to you."

I sniff and my shaking slowly decelerates. I raise my head and look at Jill in the eyes. "H-how d-did you know h-how to c-calm me d-down?"

"I know many things darlin'," she responds, giving me a soft smile.

I nod in return but don't find myself smiling. "H-how did my d-dad get here?"

"That I can't tell you even if I knew. A patient's records are classified. I can tell you this, though, he can't do nothin' to hurt ya, honey. You are safe," she points out through her smiling white teeth.

I nod, trying to keep my calm, knowing that the guy who nearly killed me is right down the hall. I look down at my bandaged arms, wondering what's going to happen to me. What am I going to do when I got out of here? Everyone knows about me at school already I bet, and Drew is in the hospital. I can't go on living like this, with no clear future ahead of me.
