HOPE WAS ALL she needed right now. When Tuseÿa had been younger she had been full of hope. She hoped to live freely, she hoped to be the perfect daughter and sister, she hoped to be the most beautiful thing alive.
Though, her hopes were soon crushed as she grew older. Being older equaled to having more responsibility, more duties and more things to fuck up on.
As Tuseÿa swam next to Neteyam in silence she thought about her past again.
She remembered swimming alongside her friends in the warm ocean, their hair being braided into tiny braids, playful smiles on all of their faces.
Tuseÿa's smile sadly hadn't last for too long, she was dragged out of the water by her father, she still remembered the exact words he said to her on that day.
"There's no time for fun for people like you!"
When Tuseÿa had been younger she hadn't quite understood what he had meant by that. "People like me?" She had asked herself. As she grew older, she started to understand it more clearly.
She was the daughter of the Chief Tonowari and therefore had to train to fall into his footsteps once the day came.
Tuseÿa still thought about these words daily, every time she was happy or had a good time she felt as if she didn't deserve it, since she wasn't born to have fun.
Because of the fact that she was not allowed to move freely and do whatever she wanted, her friends started distancing themselves from her.
They believed that Tuseÿa thought too highly of herself and therefore didn't hang out with them anymore, which was obviously completely wrong.
In fact she wanted to hang out with them more than anything.
But they didn't know that and she couldn't tell them either.
Tuseÿa cried herself to sleep almost everyday, she felt lonely, forgotten and not seen by anyone.
Her family was all she had left. She promised herself to not form any close relationships with anyone outside of her family cause she felt like they would leave one day anyway.
This was how Tuseÿa grew so closed off, distant and cold to people she didn't know.
But Neteyam somehow figured out to break the hard shell that had been around Tuseÿa her whole life. He loosened her up and gave her multiple obstacles she had to concur.
Neteyam made Tuseÿa doubt all the things she had been teached to believe.
Freedom wasn't just something only dreamers believed in anymore but something that one had to fight for.
And although Tuseÿa's life had only consisted off of fighting, she finally found someone that was going to fight for her no matter what.
Neteyam tapped Tuseÿa on the shoulder, signaling for them to get their heads out of the water.
"Are you alright?" He asked running his hand through his wet braids. Tuseÿa looked at him with a startled face, "Uh yeah." She said trying her best to avoid any eye contact.
Tuseÿa wasn't alright, Neteyam knew. But he didn't want to push an answer out of her so he just focused his gaze onto hers.
He stroked her cheek with his hand and giggled slightly, "You're such a bad liar, did somebody tell you that already?"
The corners of Tuseÿa's mouth slowly rose, her cheeks burning not only because she was embarrassed about being caught but also because of Neteyam's sudden touch.
