Sunny watched Kel run back into the house, shutting the door firmly behind him.
"Did you seriously stay sat on that chair the whole time? Weren't you uncomfortable?" Kel asked, walking up to Sunny and leaning on the table opposite him.
Sunny stayed staring at the table, feeling his face go red. He wished Kel would stop worrying about him so much, but he also loved to see how caring the taller boy was, being gentle when he took Sunny's hand.
"I'm going to get better at cooking!" Kel stated, Sunny looking up at him with an amused look on his face, which said 'You? Cooking?'
"C'mon, Sunshine, don't look at me like that!" Kel huffed, picking up Sunny and spinning him around, "I've got this!"
Sunny squealed in surprise, smiling as he and Kel looked at each other as the room spun. Sunny felt Kel's warm breath on him, leaning in more to feel his warmth, Kel gently putting him down. They were moments away from each other, Sunny's hand gently wrapped round the back of his head, feeling Kel's soft hair through his fingers. Kel had his hands placed softly on Sunny's hips, feeling just how skinny he had gotten, swearing to himself that he'd protect this boy. They leaned in slowly, their eyes closing. The doorbell rang.
"Ah! Let me get that," Sunny muttered, him and Kel looking at each other with red faces.
Kel cursed as he watched Sunny shuffle out the room and into the hall, peering to see who was at the door. First Hero, now whoever's at the door! How unlucky can I get?
Kel watched curiously as he watched Sunny open the door, realising that Basil had just come in, the two boys talking as they headed over to Kel in the kitchen.
"Hey, guys!" Basil said, seeming cheerful, but Sunny noticed how his eyes darted around and how his hands shook, almost unnoticeable, "I thought I'd come round. I noticed the note I left on the back of my house was no longer there, hoped it was one of our friends who'd found it, then came over here."
"Yeah, we don't mind you coming over, Basil," Kel said, smiling at the flowery boy, though was still mourning the loss of his and Sunny's alone time and how they could have finally kissed if Basil hadn't turned up, "but I do have one question - who the actual fuck did that to your house?"
Basil sighed, not surprised by this question in the slightest, gazing over at the windows anxiously.
"Ah- well, you know how people can get once they learn the truth..." Basil muttered, getting more agitated by the minute, his bitten nails trying to scratch at his arms, Kel looked over at Sunny when he saw this, watching as the pale boy stared at the itching hands, "you really can't be surprised at all! It's fine, though, everything will be just fine-"
"Basil, spit it out! Who was it!?" Kel raised his voice slightly, regretting it instantly as he watched Basil look up at him with watery, scared eyes and saw Sunny flinch at the loud noise.
"It was Aubrey! And... her gang.." Basil practically cried, his breathing shaky, but he seemed calmer since he spat it out, "she came round to my house a few days ago with Kim and the others, she seemed really annoyed... she was shaking... she then started banging on my door, yelling and screaming at me... she started bashing the door with her bat, then the walls... Kim followed suit then so did some of the others, but some of them ran off."
Sunny was breathing slowly after hearing what Basil had to say. Aubrey. If course it was Aubrey. She wouldn't forgive any of them. But Hero forgave them, so that should mean Aubrey should too, right? What if Hero didn't forgive them at all, but was only taking it to get close to them and retaliate? Sunny's thoughts spiralled, making him light-headed. He gazed over at Kel for support, only to see he was also shaking, but not with fear or worry... it was anger. He'd seen it before in his father after Mari's death.
"But hey, it's fine! And that wasn't the reason why I came over here today, I wanted to see if I could hang out with you guys!" Basil spluttered, trying his hardest to difuse the tension in the room and divert the conversation.
"Can you teach me something with gardening?" Sunny asked quietly, calming himself. Past is in the past, he kept repeating to himself. Past is in the past, past is in the past.
"Uh- yeah, sure!" Basil seemed caught off guard by the question, but happily agreed, leading Sunny outside into the back garden, the two of them keeping their eyes firmly away from the tree house, eyes on the grass by the house.
"We can put some potted plants below the windows, which flowers, though?" Basil asked Sunny, smiling at him, feeling calm and in his element.
Sunny shrugged, looking around for Kel, spotting him leaning against the backdoor, looking at the two of them, seeming in deep thought.
"Do you have any plant seeds or something?" Basil asked, tapping Sunny on the shoulder, "can't really start a garden without them, heh."
"Uhh, yeah, I think we have some in a cupboard somewhere... I'll go look, you can stay here if you want, prep the soil and what-not.. I'll be back in a minute."
Basil looked on as Sunny sped-walked back into the house, a concerned Kel following him. Inseperable, they definitely have a thing for each other, Basil thought to himself, smiling and pleased for his best friend.
"You good, Sunshine?" Kel asked, following Sunny into the shadow-shrouded kitchen.
"Yep, getting the seeds," Sunny said, his voice shaking, "got them! We can go now."
"Hey, what-"
Sunny brushed past Kel quickly, seeming back to normal and some-what cheery when he spoke with Basil, giving him the seeds. There's something up with him, but he refuses to say.. Once Basil leaves I'll try again. I've got this! And if it feels okay, I'll try my luck again with a confession... or a kiss... anything!
Kel watched the two until the sun set, the seeds had been planted and watered carefully and Basil was hurrily saying his farewell as he waved goodbye to the two standing in the doorway. Made for each other, Basil thought to himself, turning away from them as he set off down the street.
Sunny turned to Kel, wrapping his arms around him, sniffling slightly.
"What is it, Sunshine?" Kel asked, worried, crouching slightly to be on eyelevel with Sunny, but all Sunny did was shake his head slightly.
"I'm just so grateful to have you," Sunny whispered to Kel, "thank you so much, Kel."
Kel smiled at the boy, scooping him up and bringing him back to the fort they made, tucking Sunny in carefully as he laid beside him. When he was positive he was asleep, he leaned over and pressed his lips gently to his forehead, settling himself beside Sunny and falling into a deep, happy sleep, wrapping his arm around the pale boy who appeareed to be sleeping silently beside him, a pink dusted his cheeks.
