IT'S BEEN A rough couple of days for Miguel. Usually, with me, he's very sweet and compassionate— something that he's never really shown anyone else. Recently, though, he's been cold.

I'm not really sure what was happening, which is why I'm kind of freaking out. I can't really ask anyone else for their opinion because they'd all just give me the same answer.

Taking a deep breath, I knock on Miguel's office door.

"What?" I hear his voice. It was laced with annoyance and sadness.

"It's me," I told him from behind the closed door, "I'm here to drop off the paperwork on the latest anomaly. Can I come in?"

After a couple seconds, he speaks.

"Make it quick."

Taking a breath, I open the door. It was dark inside— I couldn't really make out where he was.

"Uhm, where should I put it?" I said in a low voice, looking around.

"Anywhere," he says.

I nod and place it in the nearest table I could see. As I did, I heard a recording. A laugh that resembled a girl's one.

I furrow my eyebrows, confused on what he was watching. I hear a sniffle, and that's when I realize.

Pulling out my phone quickly, I go to the messages app. I remember Miguel telling me about his daughter. I search up today's date, and quickly I see. Today's her birthday.

Slowly putting down my phone, I turn around.

"Miguel?"

He doesn't answer.

I look around, trying to find the light from wherever he was watching the video on. As I continue walking, I see it. I walk closer and closer until I'm right behind him.

His chest was rising and falling, most presumably to the beat of his daughter's laughter.

"Miguel."

He sighed, his voice low. "Go away."

I kneel down to the ground. "Miguel, I'm here."

His head lowers. He raises his hand to his face. I hear a long inhale and broken cries as his exhale.

I near closer to him and slowly push his head to look at me. His face was red, tears stained on his cheeks.

My heart broke in pieces.

"Miguel," I frown, taking my fingers and wiping the tears away. He melted into my hand, holding my wrist with his free hand.

He inhaled deeply, "I miss her so much."

"I know," I nodded. I slowly removed my hand and put my arms around him, hugging him.

He immediately hugged me back, his arms around me. He held me tight, his head at the crook of my neck.

After a few minutes, he slowly pushed back. He looked at me and smiled softly. I reached up and moved some hair from his face, smiling softly back at him.

Before I could do anything, I saw him leaning towards me. He was in a bad state of mind, so I knew he shouldn't have been leaning in to kiss me and I knew that I should stop it before he got to my lips— but I couldn't.

I looked him in the eyes before he closed the distance between us. Our eyes both fluttered closed, and after a few seconds, we departed.

I opened my eyes and saw him, taking a deep breath as he looked at me for a moment.
