COMING HOME FROM school, I held my sister's hand as we crossed the street and to our house. I opened the door with my keys and walked inside with Gabriella.

"Dad, we're home!" I called out as I helped Gabriella untie her shoes and take her backpack off.

I furrowed my eyebrows as there was no answer.

I look down to Gabriella, handing her her backpack. "Take this to your room, okay?"

She nods and goes to her room. I furrow my eyebrows as I begin to look around the house after taking my shoes and backpack off.

"Dad?" I called out, walking to his bedroom. He wasn't there.

I walked to the bathroom and knocked before coming in. Wasn't there either. I then walk to my room and he wasn't there as well.

"Gabby?" I call out, "Is Dad in your room?"

"No," she answered.

I sigh. He must be working late.

I've never seen him work late except for one time last year. He gave us notice that day, though. It was odd that he didn't today.

Quickly getting changed to my sweats, I walk to the kitchen. Gabby comes up from behind me, sitting on the chair immediately.

"I'm hungry," she says as she bounces in her seat.

I take a deep breath, "Okay. What do you want?"

"Mm..." she contemplated before giving me her response, "Empanadas?"

A sharp chuckle exits my mouth. I shake my head, "If I try to cook something even remotely hard, I will burn it to a crisp. Something easy, Gabby."

She groaned, "I don't know. Papá said he'd make empanadas today."

"Well, Dad's not here," I told her.

She looked at me with defeated eyes.

I roll my eyes after a few seconds, "Fine. But you can't complain if you don't like them. You'll just have to eat it."

She cheered before running off to watch TV. I chuckle before pulling out my phone. I go to Dad's contact.

Dad, where are you? I text him.

I wait a few minutes as I begin to make dinner, but still no reply. I don't know why I have this feeling that something's wrong.

I shove the feeling down and continue to make dinner.

"Please be alright," I whisper to myself.

Staring up at the ceiling, I laid down next to Gabby in Dad's bed. She was already fast asleep, but I wasn't. I was just wondering where Dad was.

He hasn't texted back or answered any of the messages I left him. He never worked this late.

Taking a deep breath, I sit up. That's when I heard a noise.

My head snapped to the direction. I gently pushed myself off the bed, grabbing a bat that Dad and I hid for emergencies.

More noises came, a few things toppling over. I kept going closer to the noise, holding the bat securely in my hands.

As I felt a figure come close, I get ready to swing.

I almost did. That's when I saw him.

I sigh, placing the bat down.

"You scared me," I say, looking up at him, "Dad, where have you been? You've never worked this late. I've been texting and calling all night."

"Sorry..." he stated simply, clearing his throat, "I lost my phone."

"Oh," I said before shrugging, "Well, dinner's in the microwave. It's not the best like yours, but they're pretty good."

He nods, "I'm not really hungry. I'm just tired."

"Okay," I shrug, "Uh, Gabby's in the bed, though. She missed you and insisted that we sleep there tonight."

"That's... fine."

I furrowed my eyebrows slightly. He's acting so weird.

"Yeah," I press my lips together, "I'm just gonna go back to my room since you're here."

"You don't have to," he looked to me, shrugging, "You can stay with Gabby here. I'll sleep on the edge of the bed."

I chuckle, "Dad, I haven't slept in the same bed as you since I was Gabby's age."

He chuckled. "You won't sleep next to your old man?" He joked, pulling me in as he rubbed his fist over my hair, "Am I that repulsive, huh?"

I laugh uncontrollably, trying to get him off of my hair, "Stop! Okay!"

He laughs and lets me go. I jump up and mess up his hair like he did with mine.

He gasps and laughs again, trying to go after me. I run away to the opposite side of the room, laughing.

I look to Gabby who begins to stir awake. She opens her eyes and sees me laughing. She then looks and sees Dad.

Her eyes light up and she immediately runs to him. "Papá!"

He catches her, chuckling, "Hey, Gabby."

She hugs him right and tells him how much she missed him. I smile as I see Dad chuckle and talk to her.

It soon fades.

The feeling still hasn't gone away.

Why hasn't it gonna away?

I look to Dad who was messing with Gabriella now.

He's here. He's safe.

He looks to me and motions me forward. I smile and go.

He's here. He's safe.
