I COULDN'T FORMULATE words anymore. All I could do was cry as I stood in front of my husbands grave. He's dead, and our poor daughter, Gabriella, still has no clue.
Why'd you have to go? I think, staring at his engraved name and then to the fresh dirt under my feet.
I let the tears fall, not caring once to wipe them. Miguel used to wipe them for me.
"Y/N?"
I pick my head up, hearing a familiar voice I couldn't quite place on anyone.
"Y/N O'Hara?" the voice called to me again.
I turn around, "Yes—?"
I shut my mouth immediately and stare at the man in front of me. He wore a suit and a painful, solemn smile.
He also wore the face of my dead husband.
"What the fuck?" I exclaim, my eyes wide as I stare at Miguel. I could finally remember what his voice sounded like.
"Uh, I know your husband died and now your seeing him stand in front of you," he started, scratching the nape of his neck, a habit my Miguel had, "I'm from another universe and I came here because... I mean, I always wanted a family and when I saw your husband was killed..."
Of course the multiverse was real. I always believed it was bogus when Spider-Man would talk about it, but... he was telling the truth.
I stare at him, my eyes bloodshot. "What, so you thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to swoop in?"
"I mean..." he shrugged sheepishly, looking down at me, "I guess."
I continue to stare at him, but I bring myself to walk to him. He looked exactly like him— it was uncanny.
I raise my hand to his cheek. He doesn't stop me.
"Do you know who I am?" My voice raised barely above a whisper.
"No," he shook his head before taking a breath, "But I'm willing to get to know you. And Gabriella."
I continued to look up at him, tracing my fingers over the few face scars he had.
"How do I know you won't go?" I ask him for the sake of Gabriella, "She can't lose her dad again."
"I won't," he shook his head immediately, "All my life I'd been searching for something. Something that would fill my heart, and when I saw you and Gabriella, that's what did it for me. A family— my family."
I take my hand off of his face. I'm going to be so impulsive right now, and it may be because I just lost my husband, but I still need him. So does our daughter. I'm sorry, Miguel, but I can't live without you.
I nod, "Give me a few days to get my affairs in order. We're going to have to move to a new town in order to live peacefully. To everyone's knowledge, you died, Miguel. If you miraculously show up—"
"I know," he nodded, placing his hand on my shoulder. I glance at it and he takes it away. "Sorry."
"No," I shake my head, reaching for his hand, "You're my— I don't know— husband now. If we're gonna do this, I want you to get to know me and I do the same."
He nodded and smiled. He interlaced his fingers with mine, holding our hands in his other hand. I reached up and placed my hand on top of ours, squeezing it.
"Let's go home," I whispered, staring down at our hands, "You'll get to meet her."
I look back up at him, noticing the hidden excitement in his eyes. He continued to smile as he nodded.
