Goodbye (And Christmas Break)

Eloise went back to London three weeks after that video call. Fiona and I came to see her off at the airport, and so did Delphine, although she completely ignored Fiona and I. We promised to keep in touch and even made a group chat for the three of us so we could keep her posted on our side of the drama.

It was a few days before Winter break, and as Fiona and I were leaving the airport, she said she wanted to meet up during the break. The only time I'd ever seen her outside of school was at Trick-or-treating, so I said yes.

I told my mom about it when I got home. She said I had to plan with Fiona about where we were going and when, and she'd take me, if it was too far away for me to walk. I texted her and we agreed to meet up at her house the first Sunday of winter break.

On the last day of winter break, there was a Christmas show. Apparently they did this every year. Being Fangirl School, the Percy Jackson department had come up with a scenario at Camp Half-Blood in Christmas and held auditions for the roles. This one was interesting: everyone was scared at first because Percy went missing (I'd read the Heroes of Olympus, but this took place before that), but it turned out he was just planning a huge Christmas surprise party for everyone at Camp. The fun thing was that the lead role wasn't Percy or Annabeth or even Grover but this made up-character called Jamaica Sparks, a daughter of Hecate, very well played by a Titan's Curse year. The show wasn't open to Lightning Thief years, or else I probably would've auditioned.

On the first Sunday of winter break, I put on a cute outfit (envision your own super-cute outfit) and went downstairs.

"Mom, I think its time to go," I said, wandering into the living room, where my mom was scrolling through something on her phone.

"Alright, just let me get my purse," she said, getting up. A few minutes later she was calling my name from the doorway.

"Bye, honey!" my mom said as I got out of the car in front of Fiona's house. "Have fun!"

"Bye, mom!" I said, closing the car door behind me. As my mom drove off, I went up the front steps and rang the doorbell.

The door was opened almost immediately. I recognized the nice lady that was Fiona's mom from Trick-or-treating.

When we were still friends with Delphine, I thought with a pang. In all honesty, I had grown to miss Delphine a little. I missed her sense of humor and her slightly annoying presence.

I pushed that out of my mind as Fiona's mom yelled, "Honey, she's here!"

Fiona came dashing down the stairs and to the front door, grinning widely. She wore a basic but still cute outfit.

(The girl in the photo is not me. Also remove the shoes, she's only wearing socks.)

"Hi, Y/N," she said, letting me in and closing the door behind me. I took my shoes off to be polite, ignoring Fiona's protests.

"Come, let's go to my room," she said, leading me up the stairs. She opened the first door to the right and let me in. Her bedroom was really beautiful.

"Why are there two beds?" I asked

"Why are there two beds?" I asked.

"Oh... the other one is for my twin," she said.

"You have a twin?" I demanded. Fiona had never mentioned a twin.

"I don't like her much," she said. "Freya. My complete opposite. I'm the brains and she's the beauty."

"But you're really pretty!" I said.

"Maybe, but not as pretty as Freya," she said matter-of-factly. She pushed her almost rimless glasses up her nose and plopped down on her bed, patting the space next to her.

I sat down beside her and looked around. Both sides of the room were really neat, but in different ways. Fiona's side had books stacked neatly on shelves, on her desk, a few laying open on the ground, while Freya's side had makeup and cosmetics everywhere; skincare, lip gloss, blush, mascara, and so much more.

"This is amazing," I said.

She shrugged. "It's not much. But it's home."

Not much? I thought. It's beautiful.

Just then the door opened.

"Oh, hey, sis," a person I assumed to be Freya said. Freya looked like Fiona but with lighter brown eyes and longer blond hair. Her skin was absolutely perfect, and her hair was shiny and silky.

I could see why Fiona said she was prettier than her. Fiona's blond hair was short and messy, and while her eyes were really pretty, she always said she wanted colored or at least lighter eyes. And she wore glasses. Fiona hated her glasses, although they were really pretty and had a very aesthetic look to them.

It wasn't that I thought Freya was prettier than Fiona, but I knew Fiona strived for perfection in everything, and Freya looked like everything Fiona wanted to be.

"Who's your friend?" Freya asked, nodding to me.

"This is Y/N," Fiona said. "Y/N, my twin Freya."

"Nice to meet you," I said.

She didn't reply, she only smiled. Then she turned to her mirror and started applying some makeup.

"Where are you going?" Fiona asked.

"Out," Freya said.

"With who?" Fiona asked.

"None of your business," Freya snapped.

"It's a boy, isn't it?" Fiona said.

"What's it to you? It's not like you have a boyfriend," Freya shot back.

"She has a boyfriend?" I asked Fiona.

"Yeah," Fiona said. "This snob called Zane. Looks okay, but he's so annoying."

"As if you'd know," Freya said. "The only guy you associate with is that Brandon boy."

"He's not the only one...well, not exactly," she said. I knew she meant Antonio and Xavier, but they weren't talking to us anymore.

Freya took advantage of her conflicted look. "See? This is why I was, am, and always will be, the more popular twin. Meanwhile all you have is your book characters."

She left the room without another word. Fiona looked beyond angry.

"I was going to ask why she's not in Fangirl School, but it feels to obvious now," I said, trying to lighten up the mood. It worked, sort of. Fiona laughed halfheartedly, then said, "Do you think we'll ever be friends again? With the trio, I mean? And Delphine?"

That last one took me a little by surprise, but I said, "Yes, Fiona. I think we will. But right now is not the time to think about that. We're going to live our lives. If they don't want us back, good riddance."

She smiled, a genuine smile. And we didn't mention them or Freya for the rest of the day.
